I started studying architecture in an era where women were not only discouraging but they actually told me “We don’t want to waste the classroom space on a girl”. That didn’t dissuade me, so they set up various obstacles for me to pass before reluctantly allowing me to be a student of architecture.
I worked for various architects in Chicago and many of them expected me to make the coffee and water the plants. When I moved from Chicago to Des Moines, Iowa, I found the local architectural firms unwelcoming, so I started my own practice in 1977. Since then, I have written for Better Homes and Gardens magazine, and they featured many of my projects. The magazine even hired me to judge their Home Improvement Contest for ten years – quite an honor and such great exposure!
I began to focus on residential remodeling which didn’t threaten the local architectural community and devised my own unique way to do it.
I began to write a weekly newspaper column about my projects and became syndicated, showing up in newspapers all over – even in Toronto Canada. Besides traveling to all my cities to do Consulting, I began to do Studio Consultings, which I offer now.
