Way back in the early 90's, I thought I was ready to work for myself, but found that I was not prepared for the overwhelming responsibilities of running a business. After about a year I shut down the company, and found a job working for someone else doing what I do best - writing, shooting and editing video.
Fast forward 15 years, and I'm working for the ABC affiliate in Chattanooga, thinking I'd retire there. After all, this was a family-owned business with many long-time employees. Out of the blue, I received a call from a gentleman I didn't know who had heard about me and my work. He was the Chief Marketing Manager of an up-and-coming national real-estate firm with celebrity investors and clients. He pitched an amazing opportunity, where I could build an edit suite to my own specifications, and work in an ad-agency type atmosphere. I hated to leave my work friends and clients, but I knew that these types of opportunities are rare, and made the decision to go for it. This was 2007 - one year before the collapse of the mortgage market. Not a good time to be selling half-million dollar condos in ritzy retirement communities. I was eventually laid off. But I dusted off my ego, set aside my anxiety, and brokered the sale of the equipment, got reacquainted with some of my old clients, and started working out of my home. The Producer who hired me away - also laid off - plugged me into some of his clients, and we have continued to work together and be great friends over the last 12 years.
What seemed to be the worst decision of my life has since turned into something I never dreamed of - true independence, plenty of creative freedom, and working with the best clients in the world!

COVID-19 has changed the way everyone does business, and that includes RanDesign Media. I still go on-location for filming, but take precautions.
However, thanks to gig-speed internet service, the potential for remote and online services abound! My work has shifted from about 25% online to over 60% online this year, and I expect this trend to continue.
One project I did over the summer involved collaboration from 4 different cities across the US, and video submissions from 16 states!
When the RanDesign Media crew goes on location these days, I insist that everyone wear a mask. That's the basic consideration for my clients and their customers. I also maintain social distancing, and use a boom mic as opposed to lavalieres or hand-held mics.
The RanDesign studio remains open, but with even more precautions. My clients must make an appointment, and we sanitize door handles facilities prior to them coming in. They open and close any doors themselves. Everyone wears masks unless they are on-camera. Again, there is no sharing of microphones or other equipment. I consider my clients to be friends as well, and I want to do everything possible to help keep my friends safe and comfortable.
