DJ Afrolicious

‘21 Certificate of Excellence

Quick Note: Make sure to read through this introduction as it may answer some questions you might have about my services. My name is James Jessie and I go by DJ Afrolicious. I'm 20 years old and I'm from Phoenix, Arizona. I'm currently enrolled at the University of Utah and I major in Game Design. I've been DJing for about 6 years and I'm available for weddings, parties, and all different occasions and events. I specialize in Hip-Hop and old school 70's/80's/90's music and I can make customized playlists to fit your needs. I'm a fun, energetic DJ who loves to dance and make sure that your wedding, party, or any other special event is a banger. While I may be young and new to the game, I'll do everything I can to make your event amazing and I won't leave you unsatisfied. If you take a look in the photos section, there's a picture of what my setup typically looks like. I provide all my own equipment including speakers, a table, my turntables, and other equipment. Usually for parties or events that have less than 200 people, I'll just be bringing one speaker. For anything above 200 people, I use 2 speakers. I also provide MC services, you just have to ask me whether you want me to use the microphone. I'm also available on Thumbtack as well and there are reviews on that profile that you can refer to. For lighting, I charge an additional fee based on the amount of lights you would want. The smallest package includes a lighting stand with 4 LED RGB Lights and 2 ground lights at $100 and the biggest package has 2 lighting stands and 4 ground lights at $200. I can also offer a bubble machine or a smoke/fog machine for an extra $50. They are cheaper alternatives to the lights and they add a nice touch to your event. IMPORTANT NOTE: Events that are booked 4 or more months in advance require a deposit in order to confirm the booking.

What’s the secret to keeping a party dancing all night long?

The secret is to be able to read the crowd and tell what to play next. You always wanna cater to the people that are on the dance floor and choose specific songs to get them dancing. Making good song decisions is key to keeping the party going all night long.

How would you describe your ‘style’?

My style is simple but with good flow. I think of it as "flowing like water". Having good transitions and good matchups with songs is key to the way I DJ. Every song flows together so nothing feels suddenly out of place (unless it's intentional).

What do you love most about your job?

I love music, being able to play music, and putting things together that you normally wouldn't think of is incredibly rewarding to me. Music is one of those universal languages that everyone understands and DJing has allowed me to learn more about how music works and broaden my library to new and old artists.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I started learning how to DJ when I was in high school and I mostly just taught myself how to use turntables and making my own projects. Over the years, I practiced a lot and learned a variety of tips from other DJs including a family friend of mine. By the time I was a senior in high school, I had been DJing for almost 4 years and I thought becoming my an independent/freelance DJ would give me the chance to branch out and maybe even find more opportunities to DJ in the future.

Why should our clients choose you?

I'm very flexible in terms of scheduling as well as prices and I'm incredibly versatile in terms of what music I play and I'm very open to customizing my playlist in order to satisfy your needs. If you want a high energy DJ who can also bust out a few moves on the dance floor, then I'm your man.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

It's important for me to stay safe during the Covid-19 pandemic and the same things goes for everybody at the event. I do my best to sanitize myself and my equipment before, during, and after attending events. I will wear a mask for most events and will do my best to maintain social distancing. You will not see leave my post very often if ever just to be at a safe distance from party-goers. I would highly recommend that customers make sure that everyone attending is healthy before and after the event in order to slow the spread of Covid-19.
