What I love most about photography is the chance to continually work with new people and new challenges. That could mean documenting a group of cancer survivors halfway around the world, showing the world a new product, or sharing who you are to your clients.

Mainframe Studios in downtown Des Moines is an absolute 5/5 star powerhouse of creativity and a must-visit for anyone who loves supporting local arts. Housed in a massive, vibrant building that stands out as one of the largest non-profit creative workspaces in the country, this venue is a bustling ecosystem of talent. Walking through the floors, you are surrounded by a diverse array of working artist studios—spanning everything from painters, ceramicists, and jewelers to clothing designers, glassblowers, and graphic artists. The concept is incredible, giving the public a direct look into the creative process and an opportunity to buy unique, handmade pieces directly from the creators themselves. The building really comes alive during their First Friday events, which feature themed open-studio nights, live music, delicious food vendors, and a fantastic, high-energy community vibe. Even on a regular day, the space is welcoming, clean, and filled with a palpable sense of inspiration around every corner. The staff and resident artists are incredibly warm, approachable, and eager to chat about their work, making art feel accessible to everyone. It is a brilliant asset to the Des Moines cultural scene and a perfect place to spend a few hours getting inspired or picking up a truly one-of-a-kind treasure! More...

So cool to be where all the magic happens and meet the artists work you admire. You can even learn glass blowing and buy finished pieces.

We didn't get to go for First Friday, when all/most of the studios were open, but the day after, to pick up our order from Lunita Planners. Lunita Planners is probably the cutest, most productive studio you'll ever come across. Highly recommend! While there, a lot of the studios still had items on display or pieces still labeled for purchase even. (Oh my goodness! So many cool, eclectic, fun, gorgeous things to see!) It really made my daughter and I want to try to get there for a First Friday again and plan to spend the entire evening. I honestly don't think we'll make it through the entire building in the time allotted. There is so much to see, do and you can even get food and drink. You really could make a day of it, to be honest. It's truly a sight to behold and always so clean and welcoming. More...

Even on a quiet day (with no events) this space offers plenty to see and is a great portal into the lives of many Des Moines artists.

What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
The secret is truly caring about helping your clients grow their business by helping share their unique story with beautiful and creative imagery.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
What is your goal for your business? How do you see photography helping?
What do you love most about your job?
I really love meeting new people in new fields. It is great to learn about other peoples passions and finding a way to help them be more successful.
