What makes a great website?
A great website effectively combines several key elements to provide a positive user experience while engaging and converting visitors into clients. Here are some of the core components:
1. User Experience (UX) and Design
*Intuitive Navigation: Users should easily find what they're looking for with clear menus, logical hierarchies, and a well-thought-out site structure.
*Clean and Responsive Design: A visually appealing layout that is easy on the eyes, free of clutter, and adapts seamlessly to different screen sizes (desktops, tablets, mobile phones).
*Fast Loading Speed: Pages should load quickly to prevent user frustration and reduce bounce rates.
* Accessibility: Designed to be usable by everyone, including people with disabilities, by adhering to accessibility standards (e.g., proper alt text for images, keyboard navigation).
*Engaging Content Presentation: Content is presented in a readable and scannable format, using headings, subheadings, bullet points, and appropriate visuals.
2. Content Quality and Relevance
* High-Quality, Original Content: Informative, well-written, and valuable content that directly addresses the target audience's needs and interests.
*Clarity and Conciseness: Information is easy to understand, avoiding jargon where possible, and presented directly.
*Regular Updates: Content is kept fresh, accurate, and relevant.
3. Functionality and Performance
*Reliability: The website should be consistently available and functional without broken links or errors.
*Security: Robust security measures to protect user data and ensure a safe browsing experience (e.g., HTTPS).
*Interactive Elements: Features like contact forms, search bars, and interactive tools work flawlessly.
*Cross-Browser Compatibility: The website functions correctly across different web browsers.
4. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
*Keyword Optimization: Content and technical elements are optimized for relevant keywords to improve search engine rankings.
*Meta Descriptions and Titles: Compelling and accurate meta titles and descriptions that encourage clicks from search results.
*Clean URL Structure: Easy-to-understand and descriptive URLs.
5. Clear Purpose and Call to Action
*Defined Goal: The website has a clear purpose, whether it's to inform, sell, entertain, or capture leads.
*Clear Calls to Action (CTAs): Users are guided on what to do next with clear and compelling CTAs (e.g., "Buy Now," "Learn More," "Contact Us").
6. Brand Consistency
*Consistent Branding: The website reflects the brand's identity through consistent use of logos, colors, fonts, and tone of voice.
Ultimately, a great website is one that successfully fulfills the needs of the potential customer and the site owner as efficiently as possible, by providing a smooth, enjoyable, and productive experience.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Before kicking off any project, it is crucial for to ask questions to understand the client's business, goals, and expectations. Some integral questions to ask a new client are:
1. To get an overview of the company and industry.
What is your company's core mission and vision?
What products or services do you offer?
What makes your company/products/services unique compared to competitors or what is your niche?
What is your unique selling proposition (USP)?
What are your company's greatest strengths and weaknesses?
How do you currently measure success for your business as a whole?
2. To learn what the goals are with your services and projects.
What are the primary goals you hope to achieve with this marketing project (e.g., increase sales, generate leads, improve brand awareness, launch a new product, enhance customer loyalty)?
How will we measure the success of this specific project? What key performance indicators (KPIs) are most important to you?
What is your timeline for achieving these goals?
What budget have you allocated for this marketing initiative?
3. To get optimal results and best ROI, get to know their perfect customer.
Who is your ideal customer or target audience? Can you describe them in detail (demographics, psychographics, behaviors, pain points, aspirations)?
What challenges or problems does your product/service solve for this audience?
Where does your target audience typically consume information or spend their time online/offline?
Who are your main competitors, and what do you perceive as their strengths and weaknesses in the market?
4. Past & Current Marketing Efforts
What marketing activities have you undertaken in the past? What worked well, and what didn't?
Do you have any existing marketing assets (e.g., website, social media profiles, content, brand guidelines, customer databases)?
What is your current brand identity, messaging, and tone of voice? Are there specific brand guidelines we need to follow?
Are there any marketing channels or strategies you've tried and definitely want to avoid (or focus on) this time?
How do you currently generate leads or acquire customers? What does your sales funnel look like?
5. Resources & Collaboration
Who will be our main point of contact for this project, and who else on your team will be involved in decision-making or approvals?
What internal resources can you provide (e.g., content creation, graphic design, data access, customer testimonials)?
How often would you like to communicate, and through what channels (e.g., weekly calls, email updates, project management tool)?
Are there any critical dates or external factors we need to be aware of (e.g., product launch dates, industry events, seasonal peaks)?
Asking these questions will allow you to gain the knowledge you need to develop a blueprint that will give you a clear path to marketing campaigns that will not only meet but exceed your client's expectations.
Describe your creative process.
Here's a general breakdown of my creative process:
1. Preparation for the project
This starting phase involves deeply understanding what I need to accomplish.
*So I create a spreadsheet to clearly articulate what I need to complete. What are things that will slow progress, my client's goals, and their target audience?
*I then research and collect all of the relevant data I need to design an effective marketing plan. So this involves market research, competitive analysis, trend spotting, and essentially engorging myself into learning about the industry and the market.
* I immerse myself in the issue or the target audience's pain points, developing patterns and exploring existing solutions.
2. Incubation
This is often a subconscious phase where ideas are brainstormed.
*After intense preparation, I consciously take a break from the problem. So I do things like engaging in unrelated activities to get my blood flowing or drawing.
*I continue to work on the issue in the background of my mind, making connections that conscious effort could miss.
3. Generation
This is where I actively generate ideas, following the incubation phase.
*I generate as many ideas as possible without choosing one or favoring one or the other. The mission here is for me to come up with as many as possible. Quantity over quality is the rule here.
*I try to look at the problem from different angles or perspectives.
* Often wild, unconventional, or even seemingly "bad" ideas spark better ones.
4. Evaluation & Selection
Once I create a pool of ideas, it's time to assess and choose.
*I simulate my ideas as being the solution to the problem, while adding in constraints, goals, and what is possible to decide which ideas are most viable, original, and impactful?
*I prioritize ideas based on potential, the resources needed, and how it aligns with objectives.
*I often find that the best solution isn't a single idea but a refined combination of several.
5. Implementation
This phase involves me bringing the selected idea to life.
*I create initial versions, mock-ups, or drafts to test the idea's functionality and how it's viewed.
*Depending on feedback and testing, I make adjustments to improve the idea. This is a loop that involves me continuously learning.
*I then produce the final idea, whether it's a new product, campaign, a blog I'm writing, or solution to the problem.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
1. Project Goals & Scope of Work
What are the primary objectives for this project? (e.g., increase sales, improve brand awareness, launch a new product, enhance customer engagement, streamline a process).
What specific problem or challenge is this project intended to solve?
What does a successful outcome look like to you? How will success be measured or determined?
What are the key deliverables you expect from this project?
Are there any non-negotiable requirements or features?
What is the desired timeline for project completion? Are there any critical deadlines or launch dates?
What is the allocated budget for this project?
2. Business & Brand Understanding
What is your company's mission, vision, and core values?
What products or services do you offer?
What is your unique selling proposition (USP)? Niche? What differentiates you from competitors?
Who are your primary competitors? What do you like or dislike about their offerings/marketing? What are their successes and failures?
What is your brand identity? Do you have existing brand guidelines, style guides, logos, color palettes, or typography?
What is your preferred tone of voice and messaging style?
3. Target Audience
Who is your ideal customer or target audience for this project? Can you describe them in detail (demographics, psychographics, behaviors, pain points, aspirations)?
What do you know about their needs, preferences, and challenges that relate to this project?
Where does your target audience typically spend their time or seek information?
4. Existing Assets & Resources
Do you have any existing assets relevant to this project? (e.g., website, content, images, videos, data, customer testimonials, previous marketing materials, CRM access).
What internal resources can you provide? (e.g., content writers, subject matter experts, data analysts, technical support).
Are there any existing systems or platforms that this project needs to integrate with?
5. Decision Makers & Communication
Who is the primary point of contact for this project?
Who are the key decision-makers and approvers?
What is your preferred communication frequency and method? (e.g., weekly calls, email updates, project management software).
Are there any other internal or external stakeholders that need to be involved or informed?
6. Operational Details
Are there any specific technologies, platforms, or tools that must be used or avoided?
Do you have existing hosting, domains, or other infrastructure that needs to be considered?
Are there any legal, compliance, or security requirements we need to be aware of?
By asking these questions upfront, you can establish a clear foundation, minimize misunderstandings, and ensure that the project aligns perfectly with the client's vision and business objectives.
