Stephens Tax Service

I have been a professional tax preparer for 13 years. I originally owned and operated a Liberty Tax Service franchise office and have been on my own for the last 7 years. I have clients across the country. I am a retired Navy officer, thus am veteran owned. I specialize in returns with small businesses with them (Schedule C, Sole Proprietorships and LLCs). I have a sub specialty with notaries and ride share drivers. Being military, I am comfortable with military returns. I can also do returns with Schedule D (capital gains) and Schedule E (rental property). I do not do S-Corp or C-Corp returns at this time. I service clients across the country. I am equipped to handle the exchange of information entirely electronically, via phone/text, email and the use of a Secure Client Folder. I accept payments by card on my website or electronically via CashApp, PayPal or Venmo. In case of audit, for all returns I provide an Audit Assistance guarantee that also includes identity theft assistance, should either ever be needed. I look forward to serving you.

What do you love most about your job?

Building relationships with my clients and helping them understand something that can be complex and confusing.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I had a 15 year small business banking career and served my country for 20 years in the Navy and the Navy reserves. After retiring from the Navy, I knew I wanted to explore entrepreneurship. In the Navy I was a Supply Corps Officer, the Navy's business managers. I was looking for a recession proof industry, have always been a numbers cruncher, and had spent enough time around income tax returns, profit and loss statements and balance sheets as a banker. I knew with some training I could make it in this industry. I'm now in my 13th year as a tax professional.

Why should our clients choose you?

I have served clients in the tax industry for 13 years. I hold an Annual Filing Season Preparer (AFSP) designation from the IRS and am working on my Enrolled Agent certification. I always take continuing education courses beyond what is required. For all clients I provide an Audit Assistance/Identity Theft Restoration certificate should they be subject to identify theft or have an audit need beyond the scope of my representation rights.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

I have clients throughout the country and am equipped to handle everything electronically. We can communicate via phone/text/email. I use a secure, password protected client folder into which documents can be uploaded. I return a .pdf copy of the return the same way. I have us review the return together before submitting. I use an automated process to allow you to sign the return. Additionally, I accept payments by card on my website, electronically via CashApp, PayPal or Venmo, or, if applicable and for an additional cost, payment can be made out of the refund.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

For my national clients , nothing has really changed since it's remote. For my local clients, many of them have chosen to use the online servicing option as well.

Your professional tax accountant will be able to advise you on the full range of options available and what is most suitable for you. Use Bark to get free quotes and get in touch with local tax accountants today.

There are a number of factors that are worth considering when choosing your tax accountant. These include:

  • Professional qualifications - You should check that they have completed relevant qualifications which are regulated by their professional body. In addition, they should be keeping their skills and knowledge up to date through continuing professional development. They are also required to hold Professional Indemnity Insurance.

  • Invest time - Invest time in finding the right adviser. Research their websites and meet those on your shortlist. When you meet them decide if they are approachable and understand businesses of your size and in your sector. It is helpful if they have expertise in particular areas of tax that you require advice for. Find out if they provide services that you may need now and in the future.

  • First meeting - Check in advance whether the first meeting is free of charge.

  • Charges - Establish the basis of fees and when they will be payable. Ask for an estimate and check what is included such as additional charges for other services (e.g. VAT, Payroll). You may be able to minimise charges by doing some work yourself and by using a compatible accounting package.

  • Terms of engagement - You should receive a letter setting out what your adviser will and will not do for you in the terms of the engagement.

  • Keeping them informed - You should keep your adviser informed of any changes in your business or personal circumstances. Plus, you should seek their advice in advance if you are considering retiring, selling or giving away an interest in your business or a significant asset.

You can be confident that any of the Bark local tax accountants listed will give you a reliable and professional service.
