What is a financial planner?

A financial planner helps you create a comprehensive strategy to achieve your long-term financial goals, such as retirement, investments, and debt management.

While an accountant is looking backwards and at a snapshot of the present, a financial planner is looking forward to the future.

A financial planner uses the data provided by your accountant, along with your personal goals, to build a long-term strategy. Their focus is forward-looking: growing your wealth and ensuring you are financially secure in the future.
In summary, you need an accountant for tax, compliance, and historical reporting. You need a financial planner for future wealth growth, investment strategy, and long-term goal planning. Using both ensures that your financial present is managed efficiently and your financial future is strategically planned.

What is the difference between a bookkeeper, an accountant and a CPA?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, there are distinct differences between a bookkeeper, an accountant, and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in terms of their roles, qualifications, and scope of work.

A bookkeeper is responsible for the day-to-day recording of a company's financial transactions, such as sales, purchases, and payments. They maintain the general ledger, ensuring records are accurate and up-to-date. An accountant then uses this data to analyze the bigger financial picture, preparing financial statements, performing audits, and offering insights into the company's financial health. Essentially, bookkeeping is about recording data, while accounting is about interpreting and reporting it.

A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is an accountant licensed by the Massachusetts Board of Public Accountancy. To earn this designation to practice in Massachusetts, they must meet rigorous state requirements, including advanced education (150 semester hours), extensive experience, and passing the demanding Uniform CPA Examination. This license grants them legal authority that other accountants do not have, such as the ability to perform certain audits and represent clients before tax authorities. The CPA designation signifies the highest standard of competence and ethical practice.

Understanding the cost of tax professionals in Boston

The cost of hiring a tax professional in Boston is among the highest in the nation, reflecting the city's strong economy, high cost of living, and the complexity of its key industries. Prices in downtown Boston are typically the highest, but costs throughout the metro area are substantial.

How much does a tax accountant cost in Massachusetts?

Based on recent data, the typical cost for individual tax preparation in Massachusetts ranges from $175 to $400, with an average of around $250.

Some tax accountants work on an hourly rate, which on average in Massachusetts can cost $150 per hour.

Like any professional service, the cost of an accountant is based on a variety of factors. The complexity of your tax return is one of the biggest contributing factors.

Here are some sample price points you might find in Boston:

  • Simple Return: A basic W-2 with state filings may cost around $200 - $350.
  • Standard Return: A W-2 with common forms (e.g., itemized deductions, interest) might cost approximately $400 - $650.
  • Complex Return: For taxpayers with significant investment transactions, freelance/Schedule C income, or K-1s, the cost could be around $700 - $1,400.
  • Highly Complex Return: Taxpayers with multiple businesses, foreign assets, and complex investments can expect to pay $1,400 or significantly more.

It’s also worth remembering that the preparer's qualifications influence the cost. In Massachusetts, tax attorneys and CPAs generally charge the most, followed by Enrolled Agents (EAs). The Commonwealth also sets standards for other paid tax preparers, ensuring they meet competency requirements for serving clients in Boston.

I am an Enrolled Agent (EA), licensed by the IRS and a specialist in all types of taxes. I manage tax compliance (filing and paying taxes), representation (speaking for clients when the IRS either audits of has questions regarding preparation of a return); and planning (arranging income and expenses over time to take advantage of changing tax rules and rates to pay less.) The truth is that no matter how "simple" the tax code gets, some taxpayers with similar incomes will always pay more in taxes over time while others pay less. I help my clients plan to be in the group paying less. I also review previously filed returns and file amendments (revised returns) for other tax years. I am also a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) who helps my clients take steps to achieve long term financial goals. These services and important disclosures are found in my website at www.ZielonkaFinancial.com.

What do you love most about your job?

Nothing gives me more satisfaction than being able to tell a client that because of the steps they took, their refund is larger, they will be able to retire on time; and it all started with the talk we had one, two, five or more years ago... I can't do these things FOR my clients, but I can show them the steps to take, and I love it when we see it all work out!

What inspired you to start your own business?

I decided to start my own business because I always wanted to "take the reins" and choose the direction I would go in. There is something about being in charge that makes me want to get up every morning and stay late at night. It makes me proud to have my name on the door.!

Why should our clients choose you?

Bark clients should choose me if they are looking for a long term professional relationship to meet and manage their financial needs. I am not a seasonal tax preparer who closes up shop after April 15. My office is open year round to answer all your tax and financial questions and help you "do the best with what you have." I sign my returns and take responsibility for my work with a solid guarantee. If the IRS has questions, I am here to provide the answers.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

I serve my clients in person (with mandatory masks and social distancing) or digitally, using email, Zoom, Facetime, eSignature and no-contact delivery.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

We have always used email as part of our information gathering and document delivery process, whether for tax preparation or financial planning. At this time we have expanded to additional digital and virtual platform's to serve clients in a no-contact environment.
