What do you love most about your job?

I love watching people react to my near-native Mexican accent when speaking Spanish. Especially watching native Spanish speakers do a double take, and then ask, "Where are you from?" And I'm just a white boy from Texas. No one in my family speaks another language, it's just me.

But really, the best part of my job is watching my students use their skills they learned in the classroom...in the real world! When I hear stories about how someone went to Mexico on vacation or on business and spoke with someone, even if the conversation wasn't perfect, that's the motivation I have to do what I do everyday.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Back in early 2020, the days before COVID hit, I wanted a side-gig while I was in college. But it turns out, I was pretty good at this tutoring and translating thing. So when the pandemic hit and everything went virtual, I moved all my services online and slowly built up a customer base. From there, we have grown exponentially and soon will have 30 active weekly students (up from 6 in year one!).

Why should our clients choose you?

Clients should choose me for 3 reasons:
1) Experience: I've been tutoring and translating now for nearly 5 years, and I have a degree in Spanish and a master's certificate in Business Spanish.
2) Mexican: For too long, students have been told to learn Spanish from all over. Why? That makes no sense. If you were learning English, would you want to learn expressions from America, Great Britain and Australia? No. So let's be specific. If you live in the US, the majority of Spanish speakers here are from Mexico. You only speak one of the Englishes, so you only need to learn one of the Spanishes.
3) Communication: I'm young and I know how to use my phone. If you need something, call me, text me or email me. I get things done on time or early. I mean, I'm one of those freaks who wakes up at 4am to go to the gym. If that's not the person you want to hire, I don't know who is.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

In fact, that's about all I do! My services are exclusively remote. I understand that post-pandemic, many people are wanting to be in-person again, but tutoring via Zoom is great because you don't have to travel anywhere and neither do I! We can both theoretically be in our PJs at home! Same with translation: I want to (and pretty much require that we) talk via Zoom frequently to make sure we're on schedule and the task is being completed to your liking. So virtual isn't a bad thing if you think about it.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Going virtual is the main answer here. If you live in the greater DFW area, I would love to chat about your needs over a cup of coffee somewhere! But mostly, everything I do is carried out via Zoom, or email/text. That should keep you pretty safe from COVID, or at least getting it from me. Hey man if you go licking public benches, we are not liable for that, you weirdo.

It was super easy working with Marisa to get our documents translated from French. She was fast and her rates are very reasonable. We will use her again for some more work. Dave Adams Redwood City, CA
