Hello! My name is Allison Berkemeier, the owner of Carolina Classic Canine. My team and I provide personalized training for you and your dog in your home environment. We subscribe to a fear free philosophy and use behavior chains and habit building to help your dog become confident and reliable. Our coaches help you and your dog become a great team - whether relaxing at home, exploring the neighborhood, or hitting the road. We help with anxiety, reactivity, and other challenging behaviors. From teaching basic puppy manners to helping you and your dog become a therapy team, we have you covered. I would love to chat with you about your dog and match you with one of our coaches. We also provide in home pet care. I have a team of sitters ready to take care of your pets and home while you are away. All of our sitters are employees - not independent contractors, and are covered under our liability policy. Every sitter is trained in fear free techniques, emergency protocol, and basic home care so that you know your home and pets are getting the very best care. Every sitting appointment has a primary and back up sitter assigned to it, and there is always a manager on call. Whether for a weekend away, or a grand tour, our sitters will let you have peace of mind that all is well at home. We have availability for over night visits, or weeks long stays. I do recommend booking your sitting dates when you make your travel plans to assure that we have availability. We are currently taking booking reservations through spring of 2025.
I really love that I can help people communicate better with their dogs. I have had several owners who were ready to give up who are now finding that they are able to communicate clearly and really enjoy their dogs.
Also, as owner of this business, I get to provide good work for others. I have the most amazing team and am humbled to be allowed to lead them.
In 2020 I started, reluctantly, working part time as a dog trainer. As a homeschooling stay at home mom with a full roster of tutoring clients, I did not think I had the time or desire to take on something else. This opportunity, however, worked out really well with my already busy schedule.
I grew up surrounded by animals - horses, dogs, cats, goats. I started training with my uncle who raised rottweilers and mastiffs when I was a kid. I absolutely loved it! It remained a hobby for all of my adult life. Over the years, my training philosophy evolved from the standard "balanced training" rooted in dominance theory to a kindness based, fear-free, behavior shaping type of training rooted in psychology.
When I was presented with the opportunity to work as a dog trainer, everything in me said that I did not have the time. For some serendipitous reason, my mouth ignored my brain and said YES! I quickly went from the only part time employee to designing curriculum and programs for a growing team. Within a year, I became a 50/50 partner. I began developing curriculum leaning heavily into behavior shaping and fear free practices.
My partner decided to retire and leave the business in 2022. Since then, Carolina Classic Canine has grown. With an amazing team of trainers and house sitters, we are able to maintain our high level of personalization while serving upstate South Carolina, north Georgia, and parts of western North Carolina. We even have sitters that will travel to Charleston and beyond upon request!
Today, I still homeschool and tutor. I teach at a classical cottage school. I also help coaching clients and supervise our coaching team. I supervise our sitting team and occasionally house sit myself - especially over the holidays so my team members can be with their families.
The personalization that we are able to provide to our customers is unmatched. We really listen to what your goals are and craft a plan specifically for you and your dog. Our fear-free and force-free philosophy assures that you and your dog will develop into a great team through the use of behavior shaping and habit building techniques. Our training is fun and broken into small bites so that it is doable for even the busiest of families.
Our pet and home sitting services are unlike any other. The attention to detail and planning is truly unique. We make sure you pets and home are well cared for and always have additional sitters and managers waiting in the wings in case of an emergency so that you can travel with confidence that all is well at home.
We are in the experimental stages with remote classes. I am not very tech savvy, but I have a great team that is working on developing remote classes, a video library, and an article archive for our clients. I would love to talk to you about options!
