Finally tried Smok'n Hogs storefront restaurant for barbecue in Manchester.  They're in a weird location, on the side of a strip mall.  We've driven past a few times and couldn't tell if they were open.  I wasn't sure if it was a doors open restaurant or just a facility to prep their catering business. My husband and I stopped in on a Thursday night.  Only one car in the parking lot and one guy sitting at a table, not behind the counter, and he's playing on a phone.  When we parked and walked in he got up and went behind the counter.I wanted a chance to really look at the menu.  I used to run a small, franchised BBQ joint 15 years ago, in New Jersey, so I had an idea of the time and investment it takes to run a place like this.  I know what good BBQ should look like and smell like. The restaurant itself is pretty large and features big plastic folding tables, a lot of them, with folding chairs.  There's a roll of paper towels on each table.  It's a step up from some of the BBQ shacks I've been to in the South but not by much.  This is fine as long as the food is good. On the counter was a selection of 6 or so house-made sauces, but the shelves underneath held 50 or so unopened bottles of commercial BBQ sauces.  It's cute- lots of little pig decorations- but what I missed was the aroma.  I expected to smell smoke or smoking meat and the inside didn't really smell like anything.  I'd like to know how often they run their pit, what kind of pit they have and what kind of wood they're using. The menu is handwritten on a white board behind the counter.  Several items had a note that they were out of that item.  The menu seemed fairly expansive, with a lot of items, for a place that wasn't very busy. As we were about to place our order another gentleman arrived, in kind of a bad mood, and started a little bit of a rant.  Apparently they signed up to be a part of Grub Hub but they don't deliver.  An order came in that somehow got tagged for delivery so the owner brought it out but couldn't find the address.  I thought to myself that I wished they delivered.  The only delivery in Manchester is mediocre pizza.  After listening to the story a few times we ordered their kielbasa appetizer, but only after being told they were out of apples so it would just be sausage on a stick. I got a brisket sandwich and my husband got a pulled pork sandwich.  He got a side of BBQ beans and I got French fries. My brisket sandwich was impeccable.  While there wasn't a strong smoke flavor to the meat, it did have a strong, deep pink smoke ring.  It was sliced thin and piled on a fresh bun.  My fries were clearly of the frozen, crinkle cut variety but they were crispy.  The pork on my husband's sandwich looked good but I couldn't see any evidence of a smoke ring.  I tasted the beans and they were tender, if a little dry, they also had a scorched flavor, like the bottom of the pot burned a little bit.  I enjoyed my sandwich and the price is a bargain.  Like, I'm seriously worried that they are charging way too little for their food.  I was charging $8 for a combo meal in 2003... they should be charging way more for such a hefty sandwich in 2019. Wow, this place surprised me!  I had a coupon so the price made it worth trying and I didn't really expect much, but the food will have me coming back.  Friendly speedy service, great flavorful selection of sauces, affordable prices, and excellent food.  I'm so excited to find this little gem so close to home!  My 11 year old just raved about it as well, so definitely a winner and deserving of the 5 stars! Awesome food made by great people.  Some of the best smoked pork in the area.  Try the nachos!

This place is slowly getting its name out as a standalone restaurant. The owners are accomplished BBQ competitors and have been in the catering business for over nine years. They recently opened their storefront this past winter. They are fast, friends, affordable, and above all else, delicious. The York area has been lacking a good mom & pop BBQ restaurant for quite some time now. They have a lot of repeat customers, and they will tell you all of their favorites. Being my first time, I tried a little bit of everything. Their Buffalo Chicken nachos were simple and were to die for. As much as I enjoyed them, my fiance couldn't get enough of them. I got the brisket sandwich and she got the pulled pork. All of the fat had been rendered down, leaving the meat tender and juicy with no gristle at all along with that nice smokey flavor that tasted like the real south. Tried all of their sauces and each had its own distinct flair, making sure there was taste for everyone to enjoy. Loved every bit of this place, will surely be coming back for more. Just trying to spread the word out for everyone. More...
