I met with Matthew back in February to get an understanding of the audit process and of the implications of an audit I was not expecting, and nervous about. He carefully reviewed all of my paperwork, listened with compassion and sensitivity and helped me understand next steps. I felt relieved and thankful for his experience, professionalism and input. He actually advised me not to hire him because the expense would be too high compared to the amount I'd owe. But he offered that if I gave him a call once the next steps happened, he'd look things over and provide guidance. What inspired you to start your own business?
After working grueling long hours every tax season for other CPA firms right out of college, I decided to start my own practice in 1990. I figured if I was going to work long hours every tax season, I might as well do it for myself instead of someone else. After several years of doing traditional tax and accounting work at my firm, a client came to me who was behind 7 years in filing his personal tax returns. After we prepared and filed his tax returns, he ended up owing a little over $42,000 with penalties and interest to the IRS. Not having any means to pay his taxes right away, I began to research his options to deal with his tax debts. I soon discovered the IRS Offer In Compromise program. In the early 1990s, it was not a well known program and very few people ever got their Offers accepted. However, I was willing to try in order to resolve this client's tax problem as I didn't see him being able to pay it off over time while also providing for his basic living expenses. After filing the client's Offer and back and forth negotiations with the IRS, I was able to settle his $42,000 tax debt for just $6,500. It was the greatest feeling in the world. Not only was the client happy but his mother wrote me a nice note thanking me! It was the first time I felt appreciated by a client. So, I decided to phase out my traditional tax and accounting practice and get into IRS and state tax problem resolution work full time. I have been doing it now for a few decades.
