John was extremely helpful, thorough, and patient with us during the design process for our home renovation. He willingly accepted our ideas during the process and incorporated them into the design as appropriate. We felt like members of a real team while working with John. We have shared the design documents with several potential contractors. They were very impressed by the level of detail incorporated into the design documents. We will definitely use John for future design work. Highly recommend him as an architect. More...

John did a fantastic job of walking us through the design phase of our home addition, taking the time to show us different options on how to open it to the rest of the house and different roof styles. Whenever we wanted to make changes he was always super accommodating. Even after the drawings were done and the permit approved, John has always been very responsive to any questions we may have during any phase of construction, taking the time to explain things to us. I would highly recommend John to anyone looking for an architect who will take the time to work with you and your needs. More...

What do you love most about your job?
After years of large scale, corporate design and construction I’m excited to be able to focus on developing personal relationships, educating homeowners and businesses, and working collaboratively with clients and builders. I enjoy working to create spaces that respond to our unique ways of living and working.
Why should our clients choose you?
My services are always tailored to the needs of the specific client. No client is insignificant and no project is too small.
Don’t hesitate to reach out for a free phone consultation; that’s a fifteen-minute phone call. I ask you about your property and goals. I'll offer suggestions, answer questions, and tell you how I can help. If the project is a fit I’ll be excited to set a time to meet in person!
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
A set of construction drawings can be developed remotely and shared for your use. Depending on the site, location and design you may need to work with a contractor and/or an engineer to coordinate permitting and inspections.
Renovations and additions require in person survey of the existing structure. I can gladly visit sites and design projects anywhere in the western half of North Carolina.
I can assist with contractor referrals and selection for local projects [Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, Catawba, Watauga, and Wilkes counties].
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
My work is performed primarily remotely. When meeting in person I can wear a mask, respect social distancing, and anything else needed to maintain a safe and comfortable environment.
New Construction – Home Plans
We can help develop a detailed set of drawings for construction and permitting. We can work with both homeowners and contractors on projects local and remote. The most efficient way to start will be for you to share your inspiration, detailed project goals, or stock plans. We will incorporate your ideas into a draft set of drawings for review and then finalized set of drawings. Fees for a set of plans typically starts at $3/sf.
Re-Arch – Renovations and Additions
Re-Arch projects are typically designs for renovations and additions. Our process for these projects focuses on studying what is existing, understanding your needs, identifying challenges, and drawing solutions [the drawing is the fun part]. The Re-Arch process often starts when we connect via the web. Our site makes it easy to schedule an initial phone consultation. The consultation is a free fifteen-minute phone call. I ask you about your property and goals. I'll offer suggestions, answer questions, and tell you how I can help. If the project is a fit - We’ll start with a site survey. We’ll meet at your site. You’ll show me your project. I’ll measure and draw. After, I’ll propose a process for the project. The process includes expectations about a series of meetings, drawings for review, documents for permitting and construction, and a fee. Then we design, we meet, draw, ask questions, and solve problems. When we’re done, you’ll have a plan for your project, confidence in your design, and construction drawings to share with a contractor for permitting and construction.
