What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
Listening. Before I ever pick up my camera, I spend time understanding what matters most to the person in front of me — what they want to feel, what they want to remember, and what they want others to see. A great photograph isn't just technically correct. It's emotionally true. The secret is creating an environment where people feel comfortable enough to be themselves, and then being ready when that moment happens.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
I always start by asking: what do you want these images to do for you? Whether it's a headshot, a wedding, or a corporate event, the purpose shapes every decision — the location, the light, the pacing, the edit. I also ask what you've loved or disliked about photos of yourself in the past, what the setting will be, and if there are specific people or moments that are non-negotiable to capture. The more I understand upfront, the better the results.
What do you love most about your job?
The moment someone sees their images for the first time. There's nothing quite like watching someone recognize themselves the way others see them — confident, present, real. Whether it's a couple reliving their wedding day or an executive finally having a headshot they're proud to use, that reaction never gets old. It's the reason I do this work.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I wanted to work directly with clients — no middlemen, no hand-offs, no compromises. When you hire a large studio, you often don't know who's actually showing up on the day. I built Harish Jaiswal Photography around one simple idea: every client deserves the photographer they hired. Starting my own business meant I could guarantee that personal attention on every single project.

For certain services, yes. Brand consulting, photo selection, gallery reviews, and pre-session planning can all be done remotely via video call. For commercial clients needing product photography, I can coordinate shipping of items to my Midtown studio and deliver edited images digitally — no in-person visit required. Portrait, headshot, event, and wedding sessions require an in-person meeting, but initial consultations are always available by phone or video.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
My studio at 545 8th Avenue is a private, appointment-only space — you're never sharing it with other clients or strangers. Sessions are scheduled with adequate time between bookings, the space is cleaned before each appointment, and I'm happy to work outdoors or on-location for clients who prefer open-air settings. If you have any specific concerns, just let me know before your session — I'm always happy to accommodate.
