Doug was the entertainment for our whiskey tasting fundraiser and he killed it. He started out the night 'anonymously' executing tricks on guests during the cocktail hour which created a lot of laughs. How long have you been interested in magic?
I was bit by the magic bug as early as I can remember. Probably my first memory was 5 years old and finding a hard rubber egg and a specially prepared blue bag on my older brother's dresser [purchased at Disney World’s Magic Shop] and wondering how I might learn what to do with it. This trick led to a Fisher Price magic kit from Santa [which I still have] which in turn led to endless trips to the 790 section (793.8 to be exact) of the public libraries in the area to find every new magic book I could. I would often take out every magic book over and over :-) Eventually I built a 30 minute magic routine and a family member gave me my first gig, then my brother’s girlfriends’ mom hired me for her youngest daughter’s birthday party. Soon I was doing birthday parties on an entirely referral basis (no internet back then and I wouldn’t know how to get an ad in a phone book).
Take us through your show – what can we expect?
Every audience and venue is different and thus no show is quite the same. However, I have a professional act for up-close strolling, emceeing, parlor (seated audience), and dinner magic. I can explain more expectations when I learn more from you about what YOU want to ACHIEVE.
I have an MBA in organizational design and entrepreneurship which helps me work with clients as large as Microsoft and as small business vacation rental company. Business clients find this knowledge very meaningful especially when I am hired to speak at or supplement content at workshops. Unlike some performers, I can participate in a workshop and follow vision, mission and organizational goals and bring it into the presentation of my magic effects very seamlessly. That's why I refer to myself as the "Brand Magi" ;)
What do you love most about your job?
Seriously, what don’t I love about it? I've been doing magic all my life. It is essential to my core and integral to my identity. I love that like any relationship, or in my case passion, magic grows with me in direct proportion to the time I invest in it.
And I do pure magic art at cocktail parties, weddings and adult parties! Here’s my biggest secret I’ll reveal: It's not about the tricks first and foremost, but the connections I make with and between people. Case in point…
I was performing for a man the other day at a cocktail party hosted by a high net-worth individual. He was in his 70s and I floated an object he gave me right in front of him. I stopped mid-performance to gauge his reaction and saw him smile like an 8 year old child - it was as powerful for me as it was for him. He didn't smile like that again for the entire night. That's why I do magic - we lose wonder as an adult.
