I’m sharing this review to caution others against working with Kimberly for couples therapy. It’s taken me over a year to gain perspective and reflect on the harm caused by our experience so that others might avoid the same situation. Kimberly initially served as our couples therapist. After we “graduated,” she began seeing my husband individually. When we later experienced marital challenges again, we decided to return to her for joint sessions. During our very first session back, I shared my perspective on a painful situation, and she responded dismissively, even saying, “But Lauren, who cares.” to some of my expressed feelings. Much of the conversation focused on my actions, without equal attention to both partners’ roles in the situation. In that moment, it was clear she had developed a bias in favor of my husband, and I confronted her in the session at that time. We canceled our next appointment. Kimberly later texted to admit that her approach had been unfairly biased and thanked me for helping her see that. Despite my clear boundary that we would not continue therapy with her, she called me at our cancelled session time, and was attempting to convince me to stay as her client, saying she was human and had made a mistake. We of course did not continue any therapy with Kimberly. With time and distance, I now see that even in our earliest sessions, she failed to maintain neutrality, often enabling my husband rather than addressing the core issues between us. While I understand that not every therapist is the right fit, I believe strongly that professionals have an ethical duty to “do no harm” and to uphold integrity and fairness in their care.
