I recently had some headshots with Gina Baker of Akoma Studios in Sandy. I've had a few headshots before, as well as more personal family photography photos, but I've never seen someone take the level of detail and skill that Gina did. At our first meeting, she went through and selected some photos that I liked. She went through her own gallery and asked me, "Do you like this one?" You know, kind of almost one by one, row by row, and had me select some of the styles that I liked and that I thought would best bring out the level of professional detail that I wanted to project in my professional headshot. When I got to Gina's studio, she had it nicely lit. It was clean, and it was in a garage in Sandy, but she had plenty of lighting in there, along with snacks and different costumes and things that people could use for their photo shoots. She had great equipment and had the computer set up right there so that we could see the shots as she took them and kind of did the picks as we went. She took some extra time and worked with different lighting scenarios and even helped me pose. If there was a wrinkle in my jacket or whatever, she would help pull that out and make sure that I looked professional during the shoot. She also gave me a snack, which is nice when you're somewhere for an hour or whatever, working on a professional headshot. So, super props to Gina of Akoma Studios Photography! What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
Connecting with the client and good light. We have set up our process to get to know our clients which creates a comfortable experience in front of the camera and truly zero in on what you need.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
How do you want to be photographed. This of course blossoms into other discussions, sorting through visuals. Even if you don't know exactly how you want to be photographed, we have a process to walk you through everything.
What do you love most about your job?
Hearing people exclaim they love their picture. A long time ago I used to be afraid of offering photography services because I did not feel adequate as a photographer. After much education and experience I am well past that point. I love connecting with others and perhaps helping them re-connect with themselves.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I love photography. That's it. I just love photography. Everything about it- the light, the stories, the people, the so many things to learn, the creation process.
Why should our clients choose you?
Skill. I have a varied skill level set from using different types of light, different types of photographer, different ways of posing or helping you feel comfortable in front of the camera. I stopped doing large groups generally because I like to give a high attention to details and photographing single or small groups allows me to do that. I would also offer that most of my clients and associates I work with say they have never seen a photographer work as hard as I do.
Connection. Then on a more personal level I have a child with autism and I am a nurse. This has helped me develop unique ways to connect with clients that you won't find with other photographers.
Responsible and responsive. Your photos are done when I say they will be done. I show up on time. I have heard so many nightmare stories about people not getting photos for months. Or the photographer ditching in the middle of the event. You will find none of that here.

Remote photography is in its infancy and is possible... but not advisable. However, if you want products you can send them to me and I will complete the whole session for you.
