I decided on a whim to stop over here after leaving Fred Meyer on a Friday night (hey don't knock it, free wine tastings- but I'll save that for a Freddys review). Anyways, I can be super weird about trying new places I haven't stalked on yelp yet. But I really wanted pad Thai. I pulled around the corner and called in an order for Chicken Pad Thai, Sticky Rice and Crab Rangoons. I looked around the block to get on to the side street to Sweet Basil (bc I discovered it does not connect through). Sadly there was no parking so I ended up circling the block and parking and walking down the street to the restaurant but luckily the sidewalk connects even though the street doesn't. That's convenient in an otherwise busy area. To get into the restaurant you have to go up a flight of stairs, which may be difficult for some. I did learn they have a sister restaurant down below and they seem to be connected and you can call either to place an order - so I'm assuming you could dine in on the first floor of stairs were a problem. The girl who greeted me was super kind. Like. Ridiculously nice. The inside was really charming. She told me how many years they'd been there- I can't remember but it was a lot (I want to say 29? But I could be making that up). But considering how long they've been in this spot and how busy the street was- inside you would never know these things. It's a small little space but looks like the perfect place to grab a small group of friends for a Friday night catch up.I took my food to go and was surprised when I got home that not only was it still piping hot, but that they served the pad Thai and rice in these plastic containers with lids that are 100% reusable. It always makes me feel better when I can give new life to take out dishes. The food was plentiful- seriously so much food! The crab rangoons were amazing  but the sticky rice wasn't exactly what I was expecting. It wasn't bad and in fact it was probably typical- I'm just used to my RI takeout place and I've yet to find a similar style here. The pad Thai is the best I've had in the city so far. I do wish that the sauce was separate to add on top because it felt a little dry and the leftovers were definitely clumped together. My kitty approved of the chicken (the true test). I liked the hint of basil in the crab rangoons!I'll definitely be back one Friday night after perusing the grocery store and deciding I don't want to cook again! More...

Sweet Basil Thai is a quick walk from my house and great place when craving Thai. I usually always get the Coconut noodle soup it's my favorite of mine. And then I rotate in the pad Thai or Pad Kee Mao. And when wanting an appetizer I go for the crab Rangoon or fresh wrap spring rolls! More...

sweet basil is great. new online ordering system is great..except when they randomly close for a day they're supposed to be open. drove to the opposite side of town excited for thai food(I'm pregnant and picky), and was extremely disappointed to pull up and see they were closed. Best Thai food I've had in Portland. Fresh, authentic, tasty, reasonably priced and they have plenty of Vegan choices! The staff is very friendly as well making it a wonderful dining experience. We'll definitely be back!
