Hidden Gem here in Hilton Head. Â Unlike those that get so much attention for being tourist-oriented, this place doesn't. Â It's off the beaten path to an extent, both street and building . Â Having said that, it was quite a surprise a day after Christmas. For the four of us, the meals were each exceptionally good. Â Arugula salad, fried chicken (among the best anywhere), and blue crab cakes (almost literally no filler). Â Nice craft beer selection, too. Service very good, atmosphere dark and inviting. Jim and the folks at Annie O's are passionate about their food. Among other great options, they have some of the best fried chicken, shrimp, smoked pork, biscuits, and collards anywhere in the vicinity. Don't even start on the chicken sandwich debate - you won't get anything close to theirs from a drive-through. Grab theirs and subsequently wonder why people would wait in line for anything less. Summary: This place is incredible, especially if you love southern cuisine.I went there last night (9/26/19), just looking for a relaxed local place that was a bit off the beaten path. I'm a fan of local restaurants and nearly always prefer them to the chains. I know that I'll usually get a chance to experience something that I couldn't elsewhere, and I like supporting local businesses as well. The two of us ordered a fried green tomato appetizer, a shrimp and grits entree and a roasted half chicken entree along with sides. Wow!Let me start with the appetizer. There were 6 friend green tomato slices, each topped with its own blackened shrimp and a balsamic drizzle. This was one of the best fried green tomato appetizers I've had in a long while. The dish came out piping hot and everything was done perfectly. Shrimp can sometimes get overcooked while waiting for other components of a dish - not in this case.The entrees were quite good and filling as well. The shrimp and grits were quite authentic and came with a side dish and a homemade biscuit. The biscuit had a good buttery flavor and did a wonderful job sopping up the remaining sauce from the shrimp dish. I opted for collard greens as a side and was quite pleased. Sometimes a dish like that can have flavors that are put out of balance - up north it's somewhat common to have them get a little too much of a sugary flavor... not in this case. The greens were spot on, with a slight acuteness of vinegar that one would expect to taste, precisely as I'd hoped to experience.Now that I've described the food, let me tell you a few more things. First, this place has reverse osmosis filtered water. You may not think this is a big deal, but it is a huge relief to finally have water down here that doesn't come out of a bottle and doesn't have a funny taste. Maybe it's because I'm used to using one of those systems at home - but it was a definite pleasure to have a restaurant that served it as part of the meal. Second, this place is environmentally conscious in their practices. That's also an important consideration - again, maybe not a big deal to some and certainly not the primary reason for my decision to dine there, but still a good thing.Finally, the service was great as well - very attentive to needs, and interested in feedback during and after the meal. This tells me that they're serious about doing things right. I feel really good about supporting places like that. More...

GO CHECK THIS PLACE OUT. We went to Low Country Backyard to find a 1.5 hour wait. I found this place on Yelp and called them. There was no wait. Hearing there was no wait scared me a little, but I was pleasantly surprised. The owner wants your business, and he'll work to earn it. The fried chicken, baked beans, fried green tomatoes, and jalapeno pimento cheese dip was great. Everyone in my party of seven enjoyed our food. The servers check on you every 5 minutes. Excellent! We've passed Annie O's while on HHI many times and decided to stop in tonight for dinner. I'm so sorry we didn't try it sooner. It is now one of our favorites on the island. Service was excellent. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. The menu is filled with healthier southern cooking. This Maryland girl was pleasantly surprised on how yummy the Blue Crab Cakes were. Two cakes with lots of crab, seasoned perfectly so the crab flavor still shown through. I had sweet potato mashers and a small kale, clementine and feta salad. My husband ordered the meatloaf and southern green beans and loved it. It was a generous portion of two thick slices cooked perfectly, moist inside with a slight crust around the edges. It was topped with just the right amount of a flavorful gravy, almost like au jus. The menu is filled with locally sourced veggies, grass fed beef, pasturepork, free range chicken, wild sustainable seafood. Even the water is filtered. My family came here for dinner after our first plan was foiled. In the middle of dinner I said "I love when original restaurant plans fail and my new plan ends up being amazing! " We were blown away by the service and food! I would highly recommend the watermelon tea, Nashville hot chicken or fried chicken, collard greens, and the white chicken lasagna. The biscuits too!! Our second visit here and the food is fantastic! Â We had a huge group and the food all came out correctly (one incorrect side dish among 26 orders), at the same time, and hot. Â Our table had FGT sliders, fried chicken dinner, fried fish, tomato pie and a salad, accompanied by watermelon sweet tea and craft beers. Â All were delicious. Â The service was attentive and super friendly. Â I echo an earlier comment that the menu is confusing with an "all day" header on one side only applying to one column.
