What’s the secret to keeping a party dancing all night long?

I've spent many years in the DJ booth connecting with crowds and figuring out what they would like to hear. There's nothing better than throwing on a song at an event that no one expects me to know is a favorite for that particular group, but that everyone in the crowd loves. It's also important to prepare ahead of time, get input from the hosts and play accordingly- is this a birthday celebration? Is there a theme? Do the guests of honor (or hosts) have favorite artists? Are there "special" songs that the whole crowd knows from school, expects to be played, etc? I also find it helpful to engage the crowd, talking to them and allowing them to request songs (if the hosts permit!).

How would you describe your ‘style’?

Every event is different and requires a different tone, but I'd say my overall style is "let the music speak for itself!" I am not the type of DJ to talk over all your favorite songs and self-promote, but I'm very comfortable with MCing and am happy to make announcements throughout the night for you and encourage the crowd (if necessary). I enjoy the challenge of seamlessly mixing songs from different eras and genres (as well as newer hits), engaging everyone in the audience regardless of their age. But most of all, it's about keeping the party going and making sure that my clients and their guests are having a great time!

What do you love most about your job?

I enjoy being able to share my love of music with people and help provide the soundtrack for all sorts of celebrations. I also enjoy the challenge of setting up and performing in new locations and situations- every event is a new experience! I have also been fortunate to travel the world as a DJ, playing in locations including London, Ibiza, Miami, New Orleans, and Playa Del Carmen.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I started my own business because I had seen a number of amateur DJ's providing substandard service and equipment at a number of weddings and other events, which ended up having a detrimental effect on the entire evening. Considering my knowledge of music and experience in multiple areas of the event services industry, I decided that I would provide a high standard for quality, service, professionalism and fun for my clients during their important occasions!

During my twenty-year career as a professional DJ, I have worked thousands of events including weddings, corporate events, theme nights, art and fashion shows, radio programs, festivals, club residencies, and more. In addition to DJing, I am classically trained in music and hold a master's degree in GLS with a concentration in Ethnomusicology/Music History from Duke University. I also served as a Conference/Event Planner at Duke University for their annual "Across The Threshold" Music and Art Conference Series, was Co-Planner of the annual Mosaic Spring & Fall Music Festivals, and Owner/Head DJ of my own award-winning lounge and private event space (Mosaic Lounge) for 5 years.
My extensive background in DJing, event planning, and venue ownership has given me a comprehensive understanding of how to work well with venue staff, planners, and other vendors, and what my clients need and expect throughout both the planning process and at the event itself. With so many hosts opting to plan their own events nowadays without the help of a professional event or wedding planner (and the growing use of "day of" planners), the DJ is now taking on a much larger role in the timing and flow if the event. Therefore, it's vital that the modern event DJ have a solid understanding and feel for planning, timing, and throwing a party, and is not there simply to make announcements and play music.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

I am fully vaccinated (card available upon request). In addition to following local and national health guidelines, I stay a safe distance from guests, use disinfectant, and wear a facemask at all times at all events. In order to keep guests involved, I have added a COVID-compliant phone app to my DJ software, allowing guests to request songs from anywhere in the venue while social distancing. I also use a full size DJ booth instead of the standard low catering table most DJ's use, which helps keep guests socially distanced from me in front of my setup. Finally, to prevent spread during microphone use, I have numerous microphones, as well as microphone stands and sterile microphone covers available for guests. My photo booth assistant wipes down any tactile surfaces after each use, we currently offer virtual props, and our photo booth can also be operated completely remotely by your guests through their phone and our QR Code system.
