Getting your insurance to pay for nutrition visits

Insurance coverage for nutrition counseling depends on your plan type and diagnosis. Here's how to maximize your benefits in New York:

Step 1: Check if you have a covered condition
Call your insurance and ask if 'Medical Nutrition Therapy' or 'dietitian services' are covered. Mention your specific condition (diabetes, kidney disease, eating disorder, etc.).

Step 2: Get a referral
Most plans require a referral or prescription from your doctor. Ask for a referral to a 'Registered Dietitian for Medical Nutrition Therapy' and make sure they include your diagnosis code.

Step 3: Find an in-network provider
Insurance pays more (or only) for in-network dietitians. When you submit your request on Bark, add your insurance provider to your requirements so you'll only hear from nutritionists who accept your plan. If your top choice is out-of-network, some plans still offer partial reimbursement.

Step 4: Verify benefits
Before your first appointment, confirm:

  • How many visits are covered per year

  • Your copay or coinsurance amount

  • Whether prior authorization is needed

  • If telehealth visits are covered the same as in-person

No coverage? You can still use HSA/FSA funds for nutrition counseling. Ask about payment plans or sliding scale fees.

The value of professional nutrition counseling

Hiring a dietitian is an investment in your long-term health. Beyond just telling you what to eat, a nutrition professional in Albany teaches you how food affects your body, helping you build habits that prevent chronic disease and improve quality of life for years to come.

Important credentials to verify

Don't be afraid to ask about a professional's background. Credentialed dietitians hold RD or RDN credentials from the Commission on Dietetic Registration and must maintain continuing education. These credentials ensure they follow evidence-based practices and can provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Note: The term 'nutritionist' is not regulated in most states, so always verify credentials.

Ways to reduce your nutrition counseling costs

If you're on a budget, start by maximizing insurance benefits—get a referral from your doctor if needed for covered conditions. Ask about package pricing, which often reduces the per-session rate. Virtual nutrition counseling is typically 15-25% less expensive than in-office visits. Some dietitians offer lower-cost initial consultations or free discovery calls to ensure you're a good fit before committing.

How important is a healthy diet to someone’s health and wellbeing?

Healthy eating is important to ones health and wellbeing because food is more than just being a source of fuel to the body. It is a source of nourishment that works at the cellular level to help you feel good, stay healthy, function (metabolic) at your peak level and perform (movement and athletic) at your optimum. All of this encompasses a state of wellbeing and to achieve that Good nutrition is paramount.

What do you love most about your job?

Teaching and educating people about health and to help understand that their biggest asset in life is their HEALTH

What inspired you to start your own business?

I see health should become a priority to each one of us so that we can be inspired and do more of what we love in life. For that it's important that people should see a massive shift in their mindset, which is about moving from a disease management to health preservation. So, I moved out of my role as a clinical dietitian in an acute hospital to start my own private practice just so I could focus on the aspects of preventative nutrition to inspire and guide people to start making that shift.

Why should our clients choose you?

I believe that it's all about mindset and habit coaching when it comes to transformation. I also go one step ahead and understand that most of our health issues are not just a byproduct of what we eat but also who are we being, what kind of emotions are we trying to digest constantly through out the day and how all of this plays into our lifestyle choices and much more. So my approach is holistic (mind body approach) and most importantly I help my clients learn to connect with their bodies so that they can be in full control of their health, body and mind.
