Insurance coverage for nutrition counseling depends on your plan type and diagnosis. Here's how to maximize your benefits in Rhode Island:
Step 1: Check if you have a covered condition
Call your insurance and ask if 'Medical Nutrition Therapy' or 'dietitian services' are covered. Mention your specific condition (diabetes, kidney disease, eating disorder, etc.).
Step 2: Get a referral
Most plans require a referral or prescription from your doctor. Ask for a referral to a 'Registered Dietitian for Medical Nutrition Therapy' and make sure they include your diagnosis code.
Step 3: Find an in-network provider
Insurance pays more (or only) for in-network dietitians. When you submit your request on Bark, add your insurance provider to your requirements so you'll only hear from nutritionists who accept your plan. If your top choice is out-of-network, some plans still offer partial reimbursement.
Step 4: Verify benefits
Before your first appointment, confirm:
No coverage? You can still use HSA/FSA funds for nutrition counseling. Ask about payment plans or sliding scale fees.
Based upon the latest Bark data, market research and regional estimates, the average monthly cost for nutrition counseling in Rhode Island is approximately $135. Keep in mind that while rates in Bristol are competitive, specialized counseling (like eating disorder treatment or medical nutrition therapy) may carry a higher premium. Many insurance plans cover registered dietitian visits. The national average is around $135 per month, with costs varying based on session frequency, credentials, and your specific nutrition needs.
Estimated investment by payment structure based on your location:
With insurance: Most covered visits have a copay of $15-50 per session instead of the full rate.

Hiring a dietitian nutritionist is an investment in your long-term health. Beyond just telling you what to eat, a nutrition professional in Bristol teaches you how food affects your body, helping you build habits that prevent chronic disease and improve quality of life for years to come.
Don't be afraid to ask about a professional's background. Credentialed dietitians hold RD or RDN credentials from the Commission on Dietetic Registration and must maintain continuing education. These credentials ensure they follow evidence-based practices and can provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Note: The term 'nutritionist' is not regulated in most states, so always verify credentials.
If you're on a budget, start by maximizing insurance benefits—get a referral from your doctor if needed for covered conditions. Ask about package pricing, which often reduces the per-session rate. Virtual nutrition counseling is typically 15-25% less expensive than in-office visits. Some dietitians offer lower-cost initial consultations or free discovery calls to ensure you're a good fit before committing.

My story starts when I was in 2nd grade and the anxiety first began. At age 8, I was diagnosed with appendicitis- here enters my gut issues.
Fast forward to my early 20’s the anxiety crept back in, but this time full force. Not only was my heart racing and thoughts scattered but it came along with major GI issues. I did what anyone else would do and booked an appointment with my primary care doctor to seek answers. Sadly, the medication that I was recommended just added to my symptoms. After some time, I was losing sleep, sometimes going a few days without rest which only added to my mental distress. I went to family and friends to see if they had any advice, and a few other doctors. After exhausting all those options, I was just prepared to live the rest of my life like this.
One day my wife was listening to a podcast (Heal Thy Self with Dr. G) it mentioned ways we could improve our nutrition and utilize nature to help heal ourselves. This eventually led me to seek out a naturopathic doctor. Her approach to medicine was unlike anything I had experienced before. Within just a few months, I was feeling amazing. Not only did she encourage me to change my diet, start taking supplements I actually needed, but daily habit changes that altered my gut and state of mind. Who knew that with just a few tweaks, and consistent lifestyle changes I could feel in control again? No more trust issues with my gut, mental health majorly improved, lost inflammation in my body and even shed a few pounds!
This made me think ‘Why don’t more people know about this?? How can I share this with others?’ I decided to enroll myself in a school of holistic nutrition. I wanted to be able to know for myself and my family, but in a way that encompassed both the body and mind. So that’s why I’m here today, to teach you the things I wish I knew and had access to in the beginning. You too can overcome many of the health issues you face, using food as medicine and the greatest healing power of all – YOURSELF!
The major difference between a regular nutritionist/dietian is this: knowledge of the importance of sleep, stress, movement, or how inherited or experienced trauma shows up in the body and organ systems. I can teach you ways to tweak your lifestyle using natural therapies and methods from TCM, Ayruveda and herbalism.
We are a virtual practice, and serve clients from anywhere in the world, remotely. Just send us a saliva sample and we are able to do the screening!
