What do website designers use to build websites?

Software and tools are ever-evolving to make it easier and quicker for web designers to work their magic. There are lots of different tools out there, so it depends on what the web designer is trying to achieve and their preferences.

There are tools specifically designed for beginners, like Wix, but these may not be sophisticated enough if you’re hoping to scale your business.

Why use a freelance web designer or web design agency?

Your website is essentially the face of your organisation. While it is possible to create a website yourself, a web designer or web design agency has the tools and experience to significantly increase your website’s value, which leads to higher website traffic. They’ll consider all the requirements needed to make a website functional and attractive.

What more, they’ll understand the importance of communicating your message in a clear and compelling way. As well as this, hiring a website designer will save you precious time. A lot of people underestimate how long web design actually takes.

The design and implementation process takes hours of coding and designing, and many businesses just don’t have the time to work out the navigation of their website or choose the right colour scheme, especially if they’re trying to get off the ground! A web design expert will be able to design and build the final product in a fraction of the time.

Web design pricing - what is the average price of a web designer

It’s tricky to determine the price of web design as no two websites are the same. However, on average, a web designer will charge anywhere between £400 – £1,000 depending on the size of the web project.

If you are looking to hire a web designer but need a clearer idea on price, read our handy web designer price guide for more information on web design costs.

How to hire a good website designer

Hiring a freelance web designer isn’t a decision that should be taken lightly. In our digital world, the internet is the number one tool to connect us. Whatever the purpose of your website, it will be the first impression that visitors have of you, and first impressions count.

It’s important to hire a web designer with the skills, knowledge, and experience to create a quality website. But with so many freelance website designers out there, it’s difficult to know which one to choose. Here are some things to look out for when choosing your web design expert:

  • Check out their portfolio - When it comes to website design, the proof is in the pudding. Always ask to see a portfolio for examples of a professional's past work. Not only will this show you their level of quality, but it will give you an idea of their creative style and whether it matches your brand identity.

  • Get testimonials - Testimonials or reviews are the best way to vet your website designer. The easiest way to find these are on their website or Bark profile. You could even speak to previous clients directly by asking for contact details. Ask previous customers about their time-management, collaboration skills and reliability.

  • Additional services - If you’re a newbie to the world of web design, you might need a helping hand with the aspects that come alongside building a website, from content creation to search engine optimisation (SEO). Ask if your web designer will be able to help with any of these aspects, and if so, how much they charge for them. Not having to source an additional freelancer or agency to do these tasks could save you time and money in the long-run.

What is web design?

Web design is the process of creating a website. Sounds simple, but there’s a lot involved. From coming up with an initial idea to the website’s launch, web design covers a website’s visual layout, content creation, fonts, colour schemes, and much more.

It also includes the technical aspects of designing a website, like coding and building pages using tools such as HTML.

Web design requires both creative flair and technical skills to produce an end product that is functional and simple to use, but also visually appealing. Sounds tough, doesn't it? That’s why you need to bring in the experts to get it done right.

What inspired you to be a web designer?

It’s been my career path from a pretty young age! I loved art at school and was in a great position to see how design on the internet changed every year. It was a pretty natural progression to study design at university and become a designer. I don’t think any one thing inspired me, I just find it really interesting.

What type of websites do you design?

We’re specialists in tech startups. All three of us in the team have worked for high growth startups, so we wanted to make sure that we used our expertise in this sector. The great thing is that they are usually more receptive to new ideas or design styles compared with ‘older’ industries I suppose. It means that the majority of websites we create are designed on mobile first and then expanded for desktop browsers. We also get to include really cool illustrations, imagery or video content on the sites.

Do you have any advice on choosing a designer?

Yes! Ask for ideas. You might not get a full homepage concept for free, but most designers can give you an understanding of their ideas. You can do so much with websites nowadays – they might even completely change your mind with the direction of your site!

Why should someone choose you?

We’re specialists so we really understand our industry. We’re actually very proud that we can influence items that aren’t specifically website design. We often talk to our clients about brand messaging or product design. The websites we design and build are there for a purpose. They help convey the brand message and boost your digital marketing as a whole.

Web Design FAQs

Expand all

How much does web design cost? This is something that can be incredibly difficult to put a figure on due to the nature of the service. There are also differences based on whether you are looking to work with a freelancer or a web design agency, and also whether you need a large, complicated site or something more simple.

We can help you to connect with the right designer to suit your needs. A clear idea of what you need, and how many pages and features are required, will be influential when it comes to pricing. This will help you to get an accurate quote for web design.

These two terms may seem like they are used interchangeably but they are two different things. A designer will be focused on the visual and creating a UI to suit the user, whereas a web developer is usually focused on the actual core of the website, making it function and using coding to enable it to do what it is supposed to.

When working with a web designer, if you want the whole package of a fully finished and functioning website, check that this is something they can offer before you employ their services. Make sure you have understood if they are offering web design or development, or both.

  • Responsive - A responsive web page design means that the site is viewable on a number of devices. The design automatically sizes to the screen and the designer doesn’t need to make formats for different devices and desktops.

  • Liquid or Fluid - This is a style of design that will shrink or stretch to the shape of the browser, and the page will look enlarged or shrunk, rather than items being rearranged. The size of the items in the design alter in relation to one another depending on the browser being used.

  • Fixed design - Fixed pages do not alter according to the browser automatically. On some devices such as tablets this can make it harder to see the content as you need to scroll around the page or pinch the screen in order to zoom in on sections. Though it is sometimes essential, fixed design is becoming less common.

Whether you are working with a freelancer or a big agency, they will have a portfolio for you to view. This allows you to see other, similar projects they have worked on and decide if they have the skills you need.

There are a number of web design certifications and they may be happy to share any they have attained, but there isn’t one standardized industry body.

If you are worried about a designer’s credentials you can also check their feedback from other clients, which you can view on their Bark profile.

Should you work with a freelancer or an agency? This is one of the decisions you need to make when looking to plan a web design project.

Working with a freelance Web Designer
This may be an option that can save you money. Freelancers are often able to charge less as they don’t have the same overheads as an agency.

Working with a Web Design agency
Web design agencies may have a bigger set of skills to draw upon than a freelancer as they will usually have a number of staff and designers working for them. They may also be able to show you a bigger portfolio, but you can expect to pay more when using an agency.

Definitely! One of the advantages of hiring a web designer is that they are able to provide services to their clients from any location. However, if your website is for a local audience, then you might want to hire someone nearby rather than further afield, so that they better understand your target market.
