What should I consider before choosing an Architect?

Here are some points to consider when hiring an Architect:

  • It is important that the architect is registered and provides you with a portfolio of work with recent images. It is also recommended to complete a site visit where the architect might point out the particular features of that project.

  • Architects need to monitor the project throughout so it is also important that they have a good working relationship with experienced contractors.

  • Some architectural services firms only do international work. If you have a small project, you might want to consider a small firm that can give you its full attention.

  • Your local professional should work with you on your creative ideas and ensure that you get the best value for money for your budget.

How long will an Architectural Project take?

A building project might take just six months or a couple of years to complete. Make sure you choose an architecture firm that you will be comfortable working with for the long term. You may meet an architect you like in the initial meeting phase but when the project gets underway, you may be working more closely with a different colleague. Make sure you know which individuals you will be working with throughout your project.

Do you need planning permission for a side return?

A side return extension is considered to be permitted development (PD). It does not need planning permission as long as the extension is within two metres of a boundary and the maximum eaves height is no higher than three metres.

How much do Architects cost?

Hiring an architectural services firm is a great investment as it can help increase the value of your home.

The cost will vary not according to the size of your extension and new rooms but how many floors are being changed or added.

Costs will normally include the design advice, on-site survey, professional CAD drawings, drawing amendments, planning applications and planning revisions.

Your expert architectural services firm will be able to help make the changes you are looking for or create a new build. They will also be able to answer any questions you may have. Use Bark to get free quotes and find a qualified architect today.

What should I look for in an Architect?

Architects need to be fully qualified, which involves five years at a university recognised by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and have completed a minimum of two years’ practical experience.

Most architects then apply for Chartered Membership from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

What can Architects help with?

Architectural services firms can provide complete drawing and design services, submit planning applications, check building regulations, undertake Structural Engineer calculations for loft conversions, extensions, internal alterations and new builds.

Architects also manage the entire process with the local authorities and should keep clients informed of the progress of their application along the way.

What do you love most about your job?

I love meeting clients and helping them to achieve the vision for their project. I appreciate that many people don't have any previous experience of extending their home or building anything new, and I enjoy guiding clients through the process.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I love the freedom and flexibility of being my own boss. I have a young family and it lets me manage my time around them, whilst focusing on the type of projects I really enjoy.

Why should our clients choose you?

I am a highly accomplished architect with over 18 years experience in professional practice, qualifying in 2010. This has included two and a half years as an architect on the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, based in the site cabins throughout construction. As well as working as a Project Architect at Niall McLaughlin Architects, the highly acclaimed and current Stirling Prize winning practice for the best new building in the UK. What I would describe as “Michelin Starred” architecture.

As well as previously running another practice, overseeing dozens of domestic extension projects across the UK, I have also spent 3 years comprehensively renovating my own home, and a further year working directly for a local building contractor.

As far as my style is concerned, I don’t have a definable approach - each project is unique. I listen to your ideas first and foremost and suggest precedents I think will work for your home.

I will setup a private Pinterest account for your project which will allow you to collate your thoughts as well as adding my own ideas and inspiration to the mix.

I also offer a Virtual Reality experience at your home as part of my service, which apart from being fun, can also give a very strong sense of space, and help to refine your design.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Whilst it is better to visit in person, it is certainly possible to deliver projects remotely, via email, phone call, Zoom, Whatsapp, Dropbox, and so on.

In the past couple of years from my base in South Manchester, I have worked on domestic projects in London, Shropshire, Wiltshire, Hull, Stoke-on-Trent and Sunderland.
