What should I consider before choosing an Architect?

Here are some points to consider when hiring an Architect:

  • It is important that the architect is registered and provides you with a portfolio of work with recent images. It is also recommended to complete a site visit where the architect might point out the particular features of that project.

  • Architects need to monitor the project throughout so it is also important that they have a good working relationship with experienced contractors.

  • Some architectural services firms only do international work. If you have a small project, you might want to consider a small firm that can give you its full attention.

  • Your local professional should work with you on your creative ideas and ensure that you get the best value for money for your budget.

How long will an Architectural Project take?

A building project might take just six months or a couple of years to complete. Make sure you choose an architecture firm that you will be comfortable working with for the long term. You may meet an architect you like in the initial meeting phase but when the project gets underway, you may be working more closely with a different colleague. Make sure you know which individuals you will be working with throughout your project.

Do you need planning permission for a side return?

A side return extension is considered to be permitted development (PD). It does not need planning permission as long as the extension is within two metres of a boundary and the maximum eaves height is no higher than three metres.

How much do Architects cost?

Hiring an architectural services firm is a great investment as it can help increase the value of your home.

The cost will vary not according to the size of your extension and new rooms but how many floors are being changed or added.

Costs will normally include the design advice, on-site survey, professional CAD drawings, drawing amendments, planning applications and planning revisions.

Your expert architectural services firm will be able to help make the changes you are looking for or create a new build. They will also be able to answer any questions you may have. Use Bark to get free quotes and find a qualified architect today.

What should I look for in an Architect?

Architects need to be fully qualified, which involves five years at a university recognised by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and have completed a minimum of two years’ practical experience.

Most architects then apply for Chartered Membership from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

What can Architects help with?

Architectural services firms can provide complete drawing and design services, submit planning applications, check building regulations, undertake Structural Engineer calculations for loft conversions, extensions, internal alterations and new builds.

Architects also manage the entire process with the local authorities and should keep clients informed of the progress of their application along the way.

What do you love most about your job?

First and foremost, we love helping people. We love working with people and companies who are passionate and committed to their projects with a staunch practice focus on delivering a considered and personal service. The places you live, work and play stay with you a lifetime and our responsibility is to interpret your lifestyle and project aspirations to design buildings and spaces that enhance your life experience.

What inspired you to start your own business?

My belief is in doing the right thing for the client every step of the way. Unfortunately, in my experience, that isn't always the priority of others in the management hierarchy in larger business where politics and commerciality take over. By establishing Indigo Architects in 2017, we have been free to put clients interests first every time and to work only with those who want to do the right thing for their projects.

Why should our clients choose you?

Our service is considered and personal. We are committed to adopting a meticulous and creative approach to all projects and believe in working transparently and honestly and, above all else, to work collaboratively and professionally at all times.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

We provide initial feasibility assessments and advice remotely through a series of online resources and through discussion with clients. At the very core of good architectural design is a requirement for an understanding of place and the design process will require a site visit in the early stages to understand context and setting as part of an initial site analysis exercise. We work with all clients to ensure this is undertaken responsibly and safely.

Tom was brilliant to work with and got our design through planning permission really quickly and efficiently. On top of her speedy and effective Jphn, Rikey was an excellent communicator who somehow always seemed to reply within an hour or so of an email, which was so reassuring. I wouldn't hesitate to use her again for building regs/planning permission guidance and help and would highly recommend.
