Plan Architect Studio are a small scale practice focusing on quality design that the client can relate to. We create a concept design using 3D visualisations that show the concept. We will then develop this design based on client feedback and produce a full package of drawings for planning, pricing and construction. We will also advise on planning requirements, building control and costings. So get in touch, whether you need more space to live, work or play, if you a breaking new ground or sensitively converting an existing building, we would love to be involved.
Mostly I love the variety, every day is different when you are an Architect. Starting a new project is always exciting, however big or small. There is also great sense of satisfaction when work is completed and clients are happy.
Many things! Having worked in practice for 10 years, it is nice to be able to learn from this and do things my way in my own practice. Being a sole trader also gives me the opportunity to better balance my work and family life, so if little ones need attention in the afternoon, my work can get done when they have gone to bed!
Having technically been my own first private client, extending and fully renovating my own house, I understand what it is like to go through the process from both sides. I also want what is best for the client and their property, I would never force expensive ideas on anyone for the sake of my own portfolio. I have diverse experience which I can apply to any domestic or commercial project and offer flexibility in how involved I can be in the full process from concept sketches and 3D models, through construction work to paint colours and flooring choices!

Where do I start? From our initial contact through to the site being handed back to us, Stephen and Arabella have been amazing partners, confidants and problem solvers, which has meant we’ve managed to bring our dream extension to life. Design -From an in-person chat, a looseish brief and a Pinterest board, they were able to come up with several amazing and varied designs in a space which was pretty limited in terms of what could be done. All of the designs were brought to life with arguably the best renders I’ve ever seen (friends also commented on how impressive they were); we are nearing completion and are very close to the real thing. -The materials chosen were extremely refined, well thought through and reflected our initial requests but with some interesting additions. -Throughout the project, the interior design, measurements, and flow have become evident, creating the ‘airy, natural, and utilitarian’ feel we wanted. -Thought out the process when unexpected problems arose. Stephen was able to quickly and efficiently create what we needed to keep the build on track/on time. Tendering -This was when we were massively out of our depth, and Stephen brought his knowledge of building, spreadsheets, comparison charts and order to the mysterious and slightly overwhelming world of builder’s quotes. Alongside judgement as to whether a builder was good/would be able to have the eye for and ability to execute the detail needed. -This was a hard part of the process as it was in the eye of the Covid/inflation storm, and prices had gone through the roof (almost to the stage where we thought we might have to go back to the drawing board), but with Stephen’s guidance and correspondence with builders we were able to negotiate, and value engineer certain bits of the project to ensure we could actually go ahead. Management and contract administration -The bit I never knew I needed but has been the most valuable. Having Stephen and Arabella ‘on call’ and administering the contract throughout the build has been invaluable. They’ve answered my incessant questions with all the enthusiasm of when we first began the process and have given us confidence (in what can be a stressful process) that the builders knew what they were doing, it was going to look like it should, and everything was under control. As you can probably tell, I’d recommend them in a heartbeat. Brilliant designers, excellent and organised project managers and lovely people.
