What should I consider before deciding on a Wedding Photographer?

  • Style - Before you begin researching photographers, you'll need to first decide what photography style you prefer as that will help determine which kind of photographer you'll want shooting your wedding. You may be looking for formal-posed portraits or more of a documentary or photojournalistic feel. Many wedding photographers can do a blend of portraiture and documentary-style shots in a mix of black-and-white and colour images.
  • Review their work - Take a look at the photographer’s website and blogs to check out photos of other weddings they've photographed to get an idea of their style. Check out their social media presence such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages too.
  • Interviewing - It is a good idea to meet your potential photographers in person. Set up in-person or video meetings with three to five potential photographers who are available on your wedding date to look at more of their work and assess whether your personalities mesh. Be prepared to talk about your venue, wedding style and what you envision for your photos.
  • Wedding Albums - Ask to see at least one or two complete albums of weddings that are in similar settings to yours. For example, if you are planning your wedding on a beach at sunset, you'll want to see pictures with that in the background.
  • Your Rights - Most contracts stipulate that the photographer owns the rights to all photos taken at the wedding, even the ones of you. Consequently, the photographer can use them promotionally on their website or blog, submit them for publication and even place them in ads. Unless you negotiate otherwise, you'll have to buy the rights to the images.

You can be confident that any of the Bark local wedding photographers listed will capture memories that last a lifetime.

What should I look for in a Wedding Photographer?

You do not need any formal qualifications to become a photographer but a good eye, creativity and technical ability are essential. Most professional photographers have taken a college or university course in photography to develop their skills.

Before choosing a professional, you may also want to ask for examples of past work, which could include images of different types of pictures that they have taken in the past. You could also look at their profile page on Bark. Bark can show you wedding photography reviews from past customers too, as well as examples of work that they have completed. This might also help you get some ideas for the style of wedding photography you might like.

Which parts of the day get shot?

This depends on each couple. Normally, we’ll take photos of the wedding preparations from the bridal party and the groomsmen, as well as before, during, and after the ceremony. We also offer add-on services if our customers want to photograph moments from their reception and party. Plus, they can choose whether they want a first look shoot and engagement photos in the weeks leading up to the wedding.

How long does it take to get the photos back?

It normally takes between 2-6 weeks for us to get the wedding photos back to the couple. This depends on how many photos are taken and what format the customers want their photos. A lot of the time is taken up by the editing process, as well as organising the photos to be printed as a wedding photo album, if the customer requested a physical copy. We can normally send digital, fully-edited copies of the wedding photos back to the customer two weeks after the wedding.

What is the editing process?

For most weddings, I’ll take around 4000-5000 photos. I’ll then whittle these down to around 600 photos by selecting the best, before editing them. Once I’m happy with the edits, the photos will be organised into different folders, such as ‘Pre-ceremony’, ‘Ceremony’, and ‘Post-ceremony’. I’ll then upload them to a photo-sharing service. If the customer has asked for physical copies, I usually suggest that they select their favourite 100-150 photos. After they’ve made their choices, I’ll send the photos off to print.

Pearl and Jason were absolutely brilliant! Made us feel at ease during the photos before the ceremony, and were brilliant getting all our families and friends together for the group photos. Everyone were complimenting about how friendly and easily approachable they were throughout the whole day.

Where do I start. This was my first time using Bark so of course I was very nervous but from the first time I spoke to Nigel I just knew that he was the one we would work with. He came across confident and very knowledgeable about his work. He asked questions to get to know me and my partner and what type of wedding we were going to have then went on to suggest a few ideas. He was also opened to our idea and opinions/concerns. The day went so smoothly and all my guest commented on his professionalism and how funny and interactive he was which made everyone feel at ease. The shoots were all phenomenal and I know for sure that we will stay in contact and defo have Nigel take other beautiful shots for all our occasions. If you are thinking of hiring Nigel as your photographer please just do it. You won’t regret it. Thank you Nigel for being a big part of our wedding
