How do I check the Accountant’s credentials?

As with any business, recommendations and testimonials will help you to establish whether or not an accountant is worth doing business with. However, there are qualifications and regulatory bodies that can help you check whether a bookkeeping business is worth working with.

In the USA, it is pretty standard to have the certified bookkeeper credential, which is issued by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. This requires four exams and two years of experience to be granted to a bookkeeping service.

Much of the rest of the world uses the IAB bookkeeping qualification. Bookkeeping firms will usually promote the qualifications their staff have, and their membership of the IAB (International Association of Bookkeepers) on their website.

What do Bookkeepers and Accountants do?

You may know that accountants handle taxes, but they can handle a lot of other aspects of business affairs and finances, too. A full list of accounting and bookkeeping services would be impossible to collate, but some examples are below. Which services you take advantage of is down to you to discuss with a bookkeeping firm.

Accounts receivable and payable

This includes the money you owe to people, and the money other businesses owe to you. An accountant may take on managing invoices, both for the services you offer and for the services you employ. They can make sure you pay and get paid on time.

Payroll

This is one of the most popular bookkeeping services for small businesses. It includes paying your staff and working out any deductions from their pay for tax reasons. Many business owners do not understand payroll fully and need the help of accounting services.

Data and reporting

This is particularly useful among bigger businesses. It includes recording and analyzing business and finance data from month-to-month and allowing for strategic planning.

Bookkeepers are also often responsible for collecting data and ensuring it is accurate, cross-referencing with invoices, bank statements, and other financial records.

Filing taxes

This is another role bookkeeping firms take on, and it can take a weight off the shoulders of business owners. An accounting firm can work out taxes and even handle the filing, leaving you free to focus on other aspects of your business. Along with this, you might be able to request an end of year report to help with analysis.

Advice and consulting

There may be ways to pay your taxes that are beneficial to a business. For example, a bookkeeping firm might advise on the best time to buy new assets, and buying in one financial year might be a better option for your finances. There may be legal and legitimate tax schemes and employment schemes you can take advantage of. The best accountants might be able to advise.

Can I use an online bookkeeping service?

There are a number of virtual bookkeeping services that use apps and rely on you uploading your financial data to be processed. These are growing in popularity, but there are pros and cons compared to using a local bookkeeping service.

Online services don’t tend to provide personal advice on how you could be saving money or tax benefits you can take advantage of. Plus, it helps if you have a bit of prior tax knowledge when using them. If you find a bookkeeper nearby they might be able to give you a more tailored approach to accounting.

I wanted to write and thank you for your prompt and thorough accounting service. Bisi was amazing. I came to you with several accounts and Bisi took them under her wing and sorted them all out professionally and even saved us money. After I provided you with all initial documentation, Bisi went right to work and prepared the needed documents in short order and filled them all under two weeks, amazing thank you so much will be using you again year after year again. 11/10 service! Quick responses & always happy to answer questions. Had my corporation tax return ready in just a couple of days and helped me save a huge amount on my tax bill in comparison to if I’d tried to do it myself. Highly recommend
