"...Being able to create effective workout plan and nutritional advice is a necessary skill that every good trainer should have, but this alone is almost never enough to successfully help people lose weight, get fit and change their life habits. It's the skill to understand peoples' situation, their "story" and reasons of why they are where they are and why they want to change..

My journey to health and wellness started back in 2008. I had found myself dependant on food to control my moods, one day I finally decided that something had to change and things needed to be done differently. Rather than yoyo dieting and taking part in exercise classes that I didn’t particularly enjoy, I knew that I needed to look deeper into my emotional behaviour and find out what was really causing me to fail.

I've been using Miro as my personal trainer for the last few months. The changes have been huge: stronger, weight loss, look leaner, the lot! Each workout is unique and Miro is constantly adding new exercises to keep my interest alive. We have had a strong focus on core strength too which has really helped me at work. I now have an extra session per week where I bring my whole team to do a lunchtime workout! I would highly recommend Miro as a personal trainer, he's based in Clifton, Bristol - go check him out!
NDM Mission 1. Help competitors prepare for their sport; provide outstanding strength and conditioning for them to minimise the risk of injury and maximise their performance. 2. Help people maximise their time and effort in training or exercise; develop long-term enjoyment of this and the best results they can get, while providing an antidote to pressures on the body and mind of daily work life.
Through a consultation I listen to what my clients know or feel about their current strength and fitness qualities. Through directed questioning I gleam some detail about previous experience, current activities, and what they like and don't like doing, any injuries, any previous successes and highlights, any qualities they want to notice and feel at the end of a bespoke block of training, how committed they are to doing what it takes.
Committing to a block of training personalised to the client, which has been set out to reduce the gap between where the client is now and where they need to get to. While results can be gained in 6 weeks, developing a long term approach beyond this is key. Great results are built on the accumulation of many small steps consistently made over time.
Body composition-wise, quality nutrition is just as crucial as training. Evidence based training principles are important to follow and incorporating variety so that one recovers well, and can exercise daily if desired.
Educating the client to the appropriate level for them to be empowered and motivated I find works really well.
I love the human interaction, everyone is unique. We all love learning, and both the client and the coach learn during every session, every block of training. Seeing clients get a buzz from training and pleasing results for them, and education they can go on to utilise moving forwards, is immensely rewarding. I am happiest when I am coaching, making a difference to lives.
I've been coaching sport for many years, and after attaining highly on a demanding specialist strength and conditioning qualification, I realised just how much unique value I can give the public, be it 1:1 , small group personal training, or group exercise, alongside my sports strength and conditioning work. I noticed how variable the quality can be out there of what is delivered when it comes to developing quality movement in their strength and fitness sessions. I had already developed multiple types of group training sessions, so offering this quality to the public seemed something I should do, and I haven't looked back since.
I am serious about your results, helping you commit to your block of training, and enjoy making sessions and the process fun and engaging, despite it being hard work!
If you're not ready to take action and commit to what we set out on I am not the coach for you!
In terms of strength training, general training of the utmost quality is key. Once a standard has been reached we can add sports-specific requirements on top.
(Advanced methods could be used at this point if there is no sport for which you are training).
Most people I see need some movement patterns re-coached, and we assess your mobility stability and basic strength, energy systems testing if appropriate, to get a good baseline of info, for you and I, of where you are at right now.
Speed, agility and plyometric work could be for you to apply to your sport. Olympic Lifting is an option with certain foundations of strength.
Energy systems work utilising machines such as rowing and spinning could transform your approach to using these for calorie burn as well as fitness gains.
Just a few tips could transform your running, swimming or surfing.
Should I work out every day of the week?
It depends on your end goal. If you’re training for a marathon, you might work out nearly every day of the week. If you’re a low-level beginner, a minimum of three times a week is enough to make a noticeable impact. No matter what you’re working out for, everyone needs rest and recovery days. Without them, your muscles won’t be able to recuperate and grow strong, so remember to factor in some down-time, too!

Does my fitness instructor need to know anything about me?
Yes! First of all, they will chat with you about your goals, and discuss the best way to achieve them. They should also ask you to fill in a consent form to check that you don’t have any pre-existing health conditions that could impact your exercise. They’ll also carry out a health assessment to get a better idea of your current fitness level, tailoring your workout plan around that.

What does a standard personal training session involve?
It's tricky to say, as personal training sessions vary significantly depending on what you want to achieve and the type of workout. Generally, one personal training session tends to last forty-five minutes to one hour. It will start with a gentle warm-up, followed by the nitty-gritty of the actual workout, with stretches to end the session. Remember, warming up and stretching is essential for injury prevention - it’s just as important as the main part of the workout!

What qualifications should a personal trainer have?
A personal trainer needs to be clued up on all aspects of fitness, from the most effective exercise techniques to nutrition and human anatomy- that’s a lot of responsibility! You need to make sure your professional is suitably qualified for the job. After all, you shouldn’t cut corners when it comes to investing in your health. Make sure your trainer has the minimum qualifications required to practice. In the UK, this is the Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification.

Can I get a Personal Trainer online?
Absolutely! Online personal training has become increasingly popular as more people are looking to maintain their fitness during lockdowns and gyms closing. As long as you and your personal trainer have a strong internet connection and a device to stream on like a laptop, tablet or smartphone, there's no reason why your session can't be delivered remotely.
