How much does it cost to install a new driveway?

This can vary depending on the type of driveway you want to install, where you’re based and what size of a driveway you have. Materials like resin, gravel, block paving and tarmac all differ in cost, and you may need to consider if you need extra features, such as a heated driveway or if you need to install a driveway drain, lights, electric gates or even drainage system - all of which will affect the cost of installing your driveway.

A new driveway can also increase the value of your home - so while it can be a large investment, it’s worth it if you’re planning on selling your home in the future.

Here’s a list of the average costs of installing different types of driveways in the UK:

The average cost of installing a tarmac driveway will be around £45–£60 per square metre.
The cost of installing a resin driveway would be about £60 per square metre.
The cost of a gravel driveway is about £60 per square metre.
The cost of a block paving/stone driveway is about £110 per square metre.
The cost of a concrete driveway is about £90 per square metre.

As we mentioned, these are an average of prices and the cost will vary depending on the type of driveway you have, the amount of labour involved and your location. The general rule of thumb is that the larger the driveway, the lower the cost per square meter.

Your driveway installation expert will be able to advise you on the full range of driveway options available and will be able to help you select the best one to suit your needs. They’ll also be able to answer any questions you may have about driveways, driveway materials and any questions you might have on gates or electric gates, too. You can use Bark to get free quotes for tarmac, resin, block paving and concrete driving installation.

What should I look for in a driveway installation professional?

Before you choose a driveway installation professional, you could take a look at The Association of Paving Contractors, Interlay is dedicated to promoting and maintaining the highest standards among professional installers. This association vets all applicants before they approve of them. Many of the professionals that appear here have years of experience and are the best in their sector.

Before choosing a professional, you may also want to ask for examples of past work, which could include images of different types of driveways that they have installed in the past. You could also look at their profile page on Bark, and Bark can show you driveway company reviews from past customers too, as well as examples of work that they have completed. This might also help you get some ideas for the kind of driveway you might like.

What kind of material should I use for my driveway?

There are several driveway material options to choose from. Tarmac driveways remain a firm favourite, but this is closely followed by resin and gravel. While it’s always best to ask a driveway installation professional for advice on these questions, here’s a quick guide to the most popular types of driveways.

Pros and cons of Gravel driveways

Gravel driveways are not expensive to install, and the materials needed to create a gravel driveway are reasonably cheap compared to other driveway options.
If you have a long driveway, then a gravel driveway is a good choice as it’s less expensive than other materials. You can also choose from an array of styles and colours of gravel, which may suit the design of your home more than tarmac, or other driveway materials.

Gravel driveways do require some maintenance, which may not be an option for everyone. You may want to avoid choosing a gravel driveway if you live in an area that is prone to heavy snow, as it’s a lot harder to clear snow from a gravel driveway than a tarmac or concrete one. Weeds can often be an issue for gravel driveways too, so make sure to install a protective membrane before you lay your gravel driveway.

Pros and cons of Stone or Block Paving driveways

Stone driveways, which are also known as block paving, natural stone or paver driveways are a chic choice for your driveway, and can often add an element of contemporary luxury to any driveway. With a wide range of colours and textures of block paving to choose from, as well as the choice of attractive patterns, block paving is a great choice if you want an eye-catching, high-quality driveway that will last a number of years.

Block paving is a great choice if you have a smaller or unusually shaped driveway, as your chosen professional can easily adapt to the area you have. Block paving is less slippery than other driveway materials - a good choice if you live in an area prone to frost, but they’re not suitable for all weather, as we’ll touch on below.

The downside to choosing a block paving driveway is that they can take a long time to install, due to the time involved in laying individual blocks. This also means that block paving is one of the more expensive options for driveways. It can also be badly affected by the freeze-thaw cycle, due to the crevices between each block. This also makes it tricky to clear snow or general garden debris like leaves off it.

Pros and cons of Resin driveways

Resin driveways have seen a boost in popularity in recent years, and they’re an attractive choice for a lot of reasons. Resin driveways can enhance the look of your home and add an element of design to any driveway due to the wide array of colours and textures available.

As long as you get a reputable driveway installer to install your resin driveway, you can wave goodbye to flooding issues and weeds. Puddles won’t be an issue with resin driveways, and they can even prevent the growth of weeds! Resin driveways are quick and easy to install and are not too expensive.

The downside to this modern driveway choice is that it does require some maintenance. If you have a lot of traffic on your driveway, a resin driveway may not be the best choice for you.

Pros and cons of Tarmac driveways

Tarmac driveways remain popular for several reasons. While they may not be the most exciting option for driveways, there are so many benefits to choosing to install a tarmac driveway in your home.

Tarmac driveways are very quick and reasonably easy to install - which is good news if you need the job done quickly with minimal disruption. Tarmac driveways are also incredibly durable and long-lasting, perfect if you plan on having a lot of traffic on your driveway - there’s a reason our roads are made of tarmac.

Another benefit to choosing a tarmac driveway is that it’s very low maintenance and cheap to maintain. It wears incredibly well and any maintenance needed can be carried out easily, and at a low cost. Tarmac is also less likely to flood, which may be a consideration for you depending on where your home is. Tarmac is well matched to brave the harsh elements and will withstand years of hard weather.

Mark and his team did a great job with my new fence panels and posts! They were clean, tidy, efficient and friendly. The garden looks so much better and very pleased with the end result of the new fencing around my whole garden. Great service and great price!

Rooster Construction have done several jobs for us totalling thousands of pounds and every time they have exceeded our expectations. Jani, is absolutely incredible. One of the most talented people we have ever had the pleasure to meet. His creativity, attention to detail and absolute skill is nothing short of genius. Florinda, who works in partnership with him, is equally as impressive. She brings complimentary insights to ensure any project is personalised and meets both aesthetic and practical requirements. Co-workers Alex and Simon are also fantastic. The entire team are hard-working, polite, considerate and friendly with a focused work ethic. I would recommend Rooster Construction 1 million times over. Simply impressive, honest and reliable....a rare find in our modern world.
