Spring’s the perfect time to dust off those winter cobwebs and give your home a good ole’ clean! The benefits of a thorough spring clean are two-fold - keeping your environment fresh, hygienic and organised, while also contributing to that ‘out with the old’ in with the new feeling that comes with the turn of spring. If cleaning isn’t your thing, here are 10 easy spring cleaning tips to leave your home sparkling.

Open the windows

First things first, open your windows for a few hours. This will help to freshen up your home and improve the quality of the air. You’ll immediately notice the difference as the stagnant air that has built up over winter is released from your home.

Treat your kitchen appliances

This is the best time to clean each of your kitchen appliances. Here are a few tips to give your appliances the clean they deserve.

Microwave

Combine one cup of water, one cup of white vinegar and two tablespoons of lemon juice in a microwaveable bowl. Place this in the middle of your microwave and set on high for two minutes. Afterwards, wipe it down with a damp cloth. This will loosen up any stains inside your microwave and leave it smelling fresh.

Washing machine

Add two cups of white vinegar to your washing machine and run a hot cycle without any clothes or detergent. This will remove mineral and detergent residue from your washing machine.

Kettle

Add a cup of white vinegar and a cup of water into your kettle and turn it on. When the water begins to boil, turn your kettle off and allow the mixture to sit undisturbed for a few hours. Then, rinse your kettle with water and admire its new, clean appearance.

Dishwasher

White vinegar is also great for your dishwasher. Simply add a couple of cups of white vinegar to your dishwasher and turn it on for a hot cycle.

Clean the fridge

The amount of bacteria that may be lurking in your fridge might surprise you. Sort through your fridge, throwing away any expired foods. Wash anything that can be taken out and then wipe down the interior with a clean, damp cloth. Then, wipe down the exterior including the handles and seals using soapy water. This will leave your fridge looking and smelling fresh and clean.

Disinfect the bin

It’s easy to forget about your bin – after all, it’s used to hold the rubbish! However, it’s a good idea to disinfect your bin regularly. Spray your bin with an antibacterial spray and give it a good wipe down. Don’t forget the hinges, lid and foot pedal.

Free up your drains

Drains can quickly become clogged with food or hair. To keep your drains free, pour a cup of white vinegar down them every two weeks. Allow the mixture to sit for about half an hour and then run cold water to flush it out.

Steam clean furniture

It’s likely that your sofa and chairs will be covered in sweat and flaked-off skin, without you even knowing it. Gross, right? Using a steam cleaner on your furniture will remove any dirt from your sofa, leaving it clean and fresh.

Vacuum your mattress

It’s easy to forget about your mattress when you’re changing your bedding. However, you should vacuum your mattress every time you change the bedding. If you notice any odours or stains on your mattress, try sprinkling baking powder over it and leaving it to sit for 30 minutes before vacuuming it up. This is also the perfect time to rotate your mattress.

Dust the blinds

Dust gathers very easily on blinds, so it's important that you don't forget them! You can use an old, soft toothbrush to gently loosen the dirt before wiping them down with a microfibre cloth. To repel dust from your blinds, try wiping them down with dryer sheets once they’re clean.

Clean your windows

The best time to clean your windows is on a shady day when your windows are cool. If your windows are too hot, it’s likely that cleaning them will leave streaks. First, use a mixture of water and soap on your windows to break down any dirt. Then, apply a mild cleaning product with a microfibre cleaning cloth.

Hire a professional Cleaner

If you want your house to look as clean as possible, it’s worth hiring a professional house cleaner for your spring clean. After all, they’re the experts when it comes to cleaning your home.
