Choosing your perfect professional

What does an Electrician do?

Electricians are responsible for ensuring the safety and connectivity of your electrical devices or wiring systems. They will install, maintain and repair electrics either within a residential or commercial setting.

Common reasons for calling out an electrician include requests for rewiring, fuse board installation, underfloor heating installation, LED lighting installation, electrical reports or general electrical problems around the home.

Often, an electrician will be called out to diagnose an electrical problem. They will find the root cause and put a plan of action in place to remedy it.

What to look for in an Electrician

The top priority is someone who is licensed for the particular work you need doing. Remember, the term ‘electrician’ covers a very wide umbrella of specialisms, so you’ll need to choose one that works in the field you need. It’s also a good idea to choose someone who is reliable and will turn up as promised.

Different types of Electrical specialists

Electricians often will specialise in a particular area, so it’s important to hire the right one for the job. Here are some of the most popular types of electricians.

  • Auto Electrician - Auto electricians are responsible for diagnosing and repairing electrical faults in vehicles. This includes cars, motorhomes, motorcycles, HGV’s and agricultural vehicles. They also fit new electronic components, parts or accessories. The processing involves rigorous testing and can be simple or complex depending on the nature of the fault.

  • Commercial Electrician- A commercial electrician works in environments such as schools, offices, hospitals and retail outlets. Their work involves installing lighting, electrical reports (EICR), PAT testing as well as general installation and maintenance work of electrical systems. Commercial electricians also work with landlords to ensure a building passes all the necessary safety tests.

  • Domestic Electrician - Domestic electricians work on projects around the home such as installing plug sockets, lighting, electric showers, hot tubs or larger jobs such as electrical rewiring. They may also work alongside other tradespeople including plumbers or builders.

  • Emergency Electrician - Do you have a safety concern with your electrics? Perhaps you can’t even get any electricity to begin with? Your first port of call will be an emergency electrician. While they tend to be more expensive, emergency electricians will see to your problem urgently, which is vital if there’s a serious issue that needs fixing.

How to check an Electrician's credentials

Every electrician should carry an I.D card that states their qualifications. They may also be registered with an official body such as the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA). Only certified electricians can carry out work in your home or commercial premises.

Can I get an Electrician online?

While it’s possible to find an electrician online that specialises in your issue, they’ll still need to meet with you in person to ascertain the scope of the job.

Who can call themselves an Electrician?

Only someone who has qualified from a recognised course in electrical engineering can call themselves an electrician. Given electricity is highly dangerous, you must never attempt to fix or install an electrical system yourself. Wherever possible, always look to hire a highly experienced electrician who works for a reputable company.

When can I get an Electrician?

Most electricians will work Monday to Friday, 9 to 5. While it’s possible to get an electrician at any time of the day, usually out of hours appointments are only served by emergency electricians. If you have an upcoming building project and you need an electrician, it’s good to book one in advance so that you get your first choice.

How do I know if I need Rewiring?

Given electrical wiring will age over time, it’s inevitable that at some point it will need replacing, and this is known as rewiring. You’re most likely due a rewire of your property if it’s been over 20 years since it was last done. If you’re living in a period property, then it’s certainly worth having an electrician come and assess whether your electrics are up to scratch or not.

Other signs you need rewiring include a persistent burning smell, scorched sockets or switches, fuses that regularly blow, flickering lights, electric shocks and exposed sockets. If something doesn’t seem right, then get an expert to check it for you.

How much does an Electrician cost?

Whether your electrician charges by the hour, a flat fee or a day rate will affect the cost of hiring one. For emergency callouts, the figure could be much higher. The scope of the job will also impact the price, especially if a full rewiring is required.
