Craig Coventry MBACP (reg.), MA, BSC. Professional and confidential counselling, psychotherapy and trauma therapy in Guilford and Woking. My approach to counselling and psychotherapy aims to enable you to explore and get in touch with your experiences on an emotional, psychological and physical level. I see therapy as a journey of self-exploration and my role is to be with on your journey and to help deepen the process where possible. When I am with clients, I work with them on an individual basis, viewing them as unique human beings and try to meet the 'person behind the symptoms'. I find this to be extremely beneficial for clients, especially those who have been to other services and feel they have not been heard or felt that they were not valued as people but seen as symptoms to be reduced or in someway faulty that needed to be fixed- unfortunately there are many who feel this way. In addition to my more generic counselling practice, I have particular interests in working with Psychological Trauma. Psychological Trauma can be caused by a range of situations such as physical or sexual abuse, neglect, bullying or manipulation, whether regular or one off events such as accidents. There are many situations that can cause individuals to elicit a traumatic stress response leaving people in high states of arousal and anxiety. What is considered a 'Trauma' not the event per se but rather the individuals response. the more overwhelmed the individual felt at the time, the more helpless they felt at the time increases the likely hood of eliciting a traumatic response. Also, where the trauma is inflicted by someone in a trusted position in the person's life, a 'betrayal trauma', the complexity of the trauma can be increased. In short, trauma symptoms commonly include: intrusion (dreams, flash backs, images of the past, feeling like the past is still happening), hypervigilance (being on high alert, anxiety) and constriction (numbing, block/avoiding, detachment and dissociation ).
There are many things I can put here. But the main things I love about this work are being able to see people heal, seeing people go from feeling hopeless to confidence and able to choose their own directions and find autonomy. To find acceptance of situations, and generally being happier and healthier people. Being invited into to people's inner world is a privilege.
There are services which people have found extremely beneficial. However, it is well known in the profession that some agencies and government funded treatments often are restricted in what they can offer, both in terms of amount of time people can spend in therapy and the actual services offered. I find it more fulfilling to work for clients, not being restricted to time limitations. I felt horrible at times working in an agency when clients came to see me who needed long-term work, and the agency could only offer short-term. So, I decided that I did not train for 6 years at university, costing about £60k in tuition fees, to only do half a job for my clients. So I work privately where time limitations are not pushed upon me from above and I can give my clients the time that they need.
It is important for clients to choose the right therapist for them. I am not going to write here trying to convince you to work with me. I would rather simply say: "If you believe what I offer would be beneficial for you, then I may be an option and would be happy to discuss. If not, then choose the therapist that seems right for you and I wish you all the best in this often scary but worthwhile journey".
How much does Counselling cost?
Your expert Counsellor will be able to advise you on the full range of services available and will be able to advise on what is most suitable. Use Bark to get free quotes and schedule an appointment today.
What should I expect from my Counselling session?
At your appointment, you will be encouraged to talk about your feelings and emotions with a trained Counsellor who will listen and support you without judging or criticising.
The therapist can help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought processes and find your own solutions to problems. However, they will not usually give advice or tell you what to do. The Counsellor might sum up what they understand you have been saying so that they can help you to form a plan of action.
Counselling can take place in a number of ways. These include:
Face to face session
Group session
Phone session
Email session
Online through live chat services or video conferencing software
You may be offered a single session of Counselling, a short course of sessions over a few weeks or months or a longer course that lasts for several months or years.
It can take a number of sessions before you start to see progress but you should gradually start to feel better with the help and support of your Counsellor.
You can be confident that any of the Bark local Counsellors listed will give you a reliable and efficient service to help you feel better.
What should I look for when booking a Counselling session?
You could look for Counsellors that are accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) which means that they have met the PSA’s required professional standards to practise.
Before you choose a Counsellor, you could read testimonials and read details of the issues they can help with on their website.
You could also look at their profile page on Bark and check out reviews from past customers too.
What issues can a Counsellor help with?
Counselling can help with many issues. These include the following:
Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or eating disorders.
Physical health conditions such as infertility.
Difficult life events such as a bereavement, a relationship breakdown or work-related stress.
Dealing with difficult emotions such as low self-esteem or anger.
Sexual identity issues.
Divorce.
Redundancy and work issues.
Phobias and fears.
Can I get a Counselling Service online?
Absolutely! Many Counsellors provide their services remotely via an online video call or the telephone. Not only is it more convenient, but it's also the preferable option for many people who would feel more comfortable holding the session from the comfort of their own home.
