Brian Baumal Psychotherapist

I am a Registered Psychotherapist who has lost 100 lbs and kept it off for over eight and a half years. I work with individuals who identify their issues with weight as psychological. Within this there are two groups of people I help. The first are individuals who have psychological issues to address with their weight, along with other psychological conditions such as ADHD, PTSD, mood disorders or anxiety disorders. I know that weight issues rarely occur in isolation, and I would say about 75% of my clients address other conditions with me as well as their weight. The second group of individuals are those who see weight as their primary focus, regardless of other psychological conditions they may or may not have had. These individuals may have tried diet after diet but failed to lose weight. They may have been able to keep of weight in the short term but always gain it back, or they may be struggling with an eating disorder or food addiction. Having been exactly in your position I can help with empathy and compassion. I know exactly what it is like to want to desperately make changes in your eating, health and weight, and feeling powerless to do so. And I also know the stakes are high in regard to your overall health and quality of life.

What do you love most about your job?

People who want to lose weight have an earnest desire to see results. I love helping people achieve their goals, as I have done. The weight loss process is long, hard, challenging and full of ups and downs. I love helping people work through those challenges using depth psychology they may not have experienced before.

What inspired you to start your own business?

While my own experience with weight loss is an obvious reason for starting in this area of work for me, I was stunned to learn that the odds of success with long-term weight loss were so low. However, the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Fad diets, unqualified practitioners, outmoded ways of thinking and even medical professional's biases against people who have weight issues all contribute to low success rates. I spent years studying all the best psychology has to offer in terms of working with emotional eating, food addiction and eating disorders, and realize that most information out there about weight loss is really not suited to people who struggle psychologically with food.

Why should our clients choose you?

My own experience is such that I can understand empathetically how clients feel throughout their journeys. Also, I many individuals with weight issues have other psychological issues they must face. As a Registered Psychotherapist, I am thoroughly trained in working with the many other conditions that often are intertwined with their weight and health concerns.

This will vary according to the level of experience and training that the therapist holds.

This will depend on where you live, what level of training your therapist has and what they specialise in (whether they are a counsellor, psychotherapist or psychologist) and also how many years of working experience they have.

Your professional therapist will be able to advise you on the full range of therapies available and will be able to help you select the best one to suit your needs. They will also be able to answer any questions you may have. Use Bark to get free quotes and find a trusted therapist today.

You need to devote some time to finding the right therapist as the connection you have with your therapist is essential. You need someone who you can trust, someone you feel comfortable talking to about difficult subjects and intimate secrets, someone who will be a partner in your recovery. Therapy will not be effective unless you have this bond, so take some time in the beginning to find the right person.

It is worth talking to a few potential therapists and asking questions. Therapists also have special areas of focus, such as depression or eating disorders. For some issues, such as trauma or PTSD, seeing a specialist is absolutely essential.

Everyone’s treatment is different. How long your therapy lasts depends on many factors.

You may be offered a single session of counselling, a short course of sessions over a few weeks or months or a longer course that lasts for several months or years.

It can take a number of sessions before you start to see progress but you should gradually start to feel better with the help and support of your trusted Bark therapist.

Professional counsellor training takes three to five years and can be a diploma or degree level. Qualification requires a minimum number of client hours acquired through a work placement.

You may also want to ask for testimonials of their recent work. You could also look at their profile page on Bark and Bark can show you reviews from past customers who have used their therapy.

Therapy has repeatedly and consistently helped patients with a whole host of issues. It can help with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or an eating disorder. Or it can help with an upsetting physical health condition such as infertility, a difficult life event such as a bereavement or a relationship breakdown. It can also be used to tackle difficult emotions such as low self-esteem, anger or sexual identity issues. Therapists also offer couples therapy. Therapists can also help with anxiety issues deriving from the coronavirus.

Absolutely! Many therapists offer sessions over the phone or through an online video chat platform, so you can have a session from the comfort of your own home - all you need is a strong internet connection and you're good to go.
