SEO is one of the single most effective marketing tools in today’s world. Most online activity begins by typing a query into a search engine. In any form of marketing, you want to position your business wherever your customer is going to be. Most people will visit a search engine at least once a day, so that’s exactly where your business needs to be.

The way to get your business to the top of a search engine is to increase your SEO ranking. You’ll do this by implementing SEO techniques to tell Google and other search engines exactly what they need to know about your content and your business.

Read on to find out how you can boost your SEO ranking and increase the visibility of your website.

Be selective with your keywords

A keyword is a word or phrase which is picked up by a search engine. When a user searches for that word, Google will search through its records and try and find the website which provides the best match to those keywords.

However, short keywords typically have high levels of competition. For example, ‘marketing’ is a highly competitive keyword that will be difficult to rank for unless your website already has high levels of domain authority.

The long-tail keyword ‘social media marketing for small businesses’ has a much lower level of competition, so will be much easier to rank for. Using long-tail keywords like this will also help to ensure that your web traffic is targeted and relevant, giving you a much better chance of converting those visitors to your services.

To find your long-tail keywords, think about the type of things your customers would be typing into a search engine and the questions they want to ask. You can also use keyword research tools such as Moz, Ahrefs, or UberSuggest to discover new long-tail keywords to target.

Be consistent

Consistency is key when you’re trying to get your web pages ranking on search engines such as Google. You’ll need to be posting quality, relevant content on your website as often as possible – at least every week is ideal.

Search engines recognize websites that post regular quality content as having a higher level of authority than those who only post sporadically. After all, they’re looking for the highest quality, most relevant content to show to their searchers.

The more in-depth articles that you post on your website each month, the higher your chances are of becoming an authority in the field. The more authority you have, the higher your chances of making it onto the first page of Google.

Don’t forget the metadata

It’s easy to forget to add metadata to your website content, but it’s more important than you might think. This includes a meta description, which is the short snippet that shows up in search results on Google. Try and include your keyword in both your meta title and meta description to give your content the best possible chance of ranking for your chosen keyword.

You’ll also need to think about the ‘slug’ that you use. That’s not the shell-less mollusk that you find in your garden, but the part of your website URL that directs to that page. For example, your blog post about social media marketing for small businesses might use the slug /social-media-marketing-for-small-businesses, to tell Google exactly what the page is about.

Build credible links

Link building can be challenging, but it’s absolutely essential if you want to reach the first page of Google. Search engines see links as good reviews for your content. The more links that there are to your content, the more credible it thinks that your content is.

To build links, you’ll need to convince other site owners that your content is worth sharing. You can do this in two ways: you can either create amazing content that viewers can’t help but share, or you can reach out to potential collaborators and convince them that your content would add value to their viewers.

Building links is one of the best ways to increase your domain authority, but it isn’t an easy task and it certainly won’t happen overnight. It will take hard work and determination, but it will be worth it when you begin to see the results.
