No two security companies are created equal. When the safety of your business and all those who use it are at stake, you want to make sure you are dealing with the right people. The ideal solution is a team who are qualified and experienced to take your specific job on. So how do you go about finding this within the world of security?

In no particular order, here are 5 things to consider when hiring a security company to tell you more.

Are They Qualified And Insured?

Since 2001, it has been a legal requirement that all security guards are SIA trained, and that they have a valid license to prove this which they display at all times. Hiring a security guard who isn’t qualified can land you with a hefty fine or a jail sentence.

The security company should also be fully insured for the type of security work you require, as well as the type of building they will be working in. Always ask for this information in advance before you sign the contract.

Can They Give You All The Services You Need?

Security guards vary in the kinds of services they can offer. For example, manning a security station, night patrolling or key holding. The aspect you need security for might not match up with what they offer.

This matters because if your security doesn't know how to operate or respond to a particular incident type, it could be a disaster. So make sure you choose the right company for your particular niche.

Do they have great customer service?

As security work is a public facing role, each individual must reflect your business or event in the right way. Bad tempered or rude security never works out for the better, especially in the age of the camera phone.

The customer service should extend to you as the client too. When you enquire about hiring them, do they have a prompt response time? Are they upbeat and professional? If not, it could be a major red flag.

How much industry experience do they have?

Security companies are popping up all over the place, so you want to be sure their experience isn’t as fresh as their business is. The best security guards have seen and done it all, and will have an impressive CV to prove it.

While you want your security to be physically fit, they should also be at the point in their career where they can handle all the challenges this line of work will throw at them. This includes the likes of conflict management which will definitely be required if the venue serves alcohol. They will be representing your business and its response to certain situations after all.

What other skills can they provide?

Security guards are hired primarily to protect people and property. However, they can provide other useful skills too. One of the main skills to look out for is first aid, which could reduce your expenditure if your security can provide these two important jobs. Since April 2020, all new SIA licensees must undertake first aid as part of their training.

Some security is also experts in the likes of crowd control or undercover security work. Or, they could have experience in working with high value assets, such as cash in transit (CIT). If so they will be qualified to move large sums of money on behalf of your staff. This would also reduce the threat posed to your business, especially if your store is retail based.

To sum up

Your security should keep everyone in your building safe, while effectively preventing crime from taking place. By hiring qualified and experienced individuals, who specialise in the exact security work your business needs, it will help ensure this is the case.
