Making a house a home

Whether you live in a Bristol city apartment, terraced house or detached property, you’ll probably need to carry out some building work at some point or another. Many people choose to renovate a new property to create a home that’s perfect for them. From house extensions to kitchen and bathroom renovations, even new build properties can be changed to create your ideal home. With a record number of property developments currently taking place across Bristol, more people are looking for unique ways to make their new house a home. Once you have your heart set on a particular home improvement project, the next most important step is finding the best local builder for the job.

Accessibility is the key

For the most part, general building work is not a small affair. From wall building to roofing to concrete laying, most building projects require numerous workers, tools, materials and vehicles. This means that there are certain challenges regarding the accessibility of your property. Can your road accomodate a cement mixer lorry? Do you have room for a skip with waste materials? Will the builders have to go through your home or will they have garden access? These are all questions that you will have to discuss with your building contractor. Whatever specialist equipment or vehicles you may need, you’ll want to find the best builders for the job, which is where Bark can help.

Repairs are essential

Even a property that you have lived in and maintained for years will need structural repairs from time to time. Plaster cracks, bricks erode, and the elements take their toll on your home’s exterior. Not only can this make your home look unsightly, it can actually cause severe damage if not attended to. Tackling these issues early – and with the help of a professional, qualified building contractor – is the best way to ensure the safety and upkeep of your home.

One of the most damaging issues is subsidence, which is when a property sinks into the ground that it’s been built on. This can be gradual or sudden, and can be caused naturally or by human activity, such as nearby building work. As subsidence affects the foundations of a property, it puts a strain on the property’s structure, which can cause cracks throughout the building. There are building contractors in Bristol who can help tackle and prevent subsidence, and Bark can help you find them.

How do you work around a customer’s time constraints?

It all depends on what the time restraints are. Sometimes we can only work during certain hours of the day, and sometimes a customer needs a construction job completed in a certain amount of weeks. In every case, we work with the customer to create a job schedule that works for everyone. That can mean allocating more workers to the job, contracting out certain services, or simply managing the customer’s expectations. Whatever agreement we come to, we never compromise on the quality of our work.

Do you typically work with any contractors?

Again, it all depends on the job in question. As general builders, we provide a wide variety of building services. From bricklaying to tiling, carpentry to plastering, we have the skills and craftsmanship to pretty much do most building work. However, it’s sometimes necessary to bring in contractors, either because of time constraints or for their specialist services. This is typically the case for plumbers, electricians, architects, and construction engineers.

What qualifications do you need for general building work?

While there are many qualifications and certifications within the wider construction industry, there’s no obligatory qualification that’s required for general building work. The most important qualification that any type of builder should have is a CSCS Card. This card covers the fundamentals of health and safety while on a construction site. Everyone from the labourers to the contractors should have a CSCS Card to ensure the highest level of safety for the duration of the building work. You should ideally also look out for building companies with an NVQ Level 3 and Asbestos Licence. While not required by law, they are a great indicator of trustworthy and professional building contractors.
