Hi, my name is Ruth Dines and I really do know how daunting it can be to begin counselling, but a strong and supportive therapist can make a huge difference to your life and well-being. Here are 7 ways I can help you as a therapist: I can build a strong and trusting relationship with you Help you to feel heard and understood Help you to make sense of your feelings or understand why you are not feeling Enable you to become more curious about yourself so you can gain greater insight When appropriate challenge you, but only gently and when you are ready Give you a different lens through which to see your relationships and life Help you to feel stronger and more resilient in challenging situations, and help you to deal with difficult people. You are the expert on you, so we will work together to explore your current difficulties, looking at them through a new lens so you have greater insight and perspective. This will help you to gain a clearer sense of who you really are, and what you really want out of your relationships and life, so you can find a better way forward. Because I know it can take time to find the right therapist I am happy to have a free first 20 minute session with you on the phone. This will give us the opportunity to talk about what brings you to counselling, and for you to ask any questions you may have. If you feel I can help you we can then decide how best we can go forward and work together. I currently work in Barnet (EN5) which offers easy links to public transport as well as in the city near Farringdon Station (EC1R). I offer time limited, short term and open-ended sessions and you decide how long you want to be in therapy for, there is no long-term commitment. I offer daytime and evening appointments, and I also have a small number of weekend appointments available too. My background I am a fully qualified therapist and a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. I trained as an integrative counsellor which means I can bring together a range of different theoretical and practical approaches, enabling me to tailor my approach and style to suit the personality and situation of each client. I am warm and down to earth, professional and supportive, curious and challenging, so I won’t just sit there and listen without engaging with you. I will offer you a safe, non- judgemental space where you can talk freely about what is troubling you. I currently volunteer as a Loss and Bereavement Counsellor at a Hospice in North London where I also co-facilitate relaxation groups for carers and patients. I also teach the Diploma in Integrative counselling at a local college. If you are interested in working together then phone me for an initial chat and we can take it from there. What do you love most about your job?

The fact that I can help people discover more about themselves, and being able to work with them to find the answers to what is troubling them, is really a privilege.

It is so wonderful when you see someone change and grow, see them explore who they really are and then see them become happier and more content in their life . But not everyone can make the changes needed, and in these cases, as a therapist, it's about helping them to accept all the parts of themselves.

What inspired you to start your own business?

It was simple, to help people be the best they can. As Oscar Wilde said

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

Why should our clients choose you?

I am down to earth, but warm and professional. I won't just sit and listen, I will be involved and active in helping you to learn about yourself and what is troubling you. The most important indicator for successful therapy is the relationship between the therapist and client, so if you feel I am the sort of person you would feel safe, comfortable and supported by then you will hopefully have some confidence that I will be the right person for you.

Counselling FAQs

Your expert Counsellor will be able to advise you on the full range of services available and will be able to advise on what is most suitable. Use Bark to get free quotes and schedule an appointment today.

At your appointment, you will be encouraged to talk about your feelings and emotions with a trained Counsellor who will listen and support you without judging or criticising.
The therapist can help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought processes and find your own solutions to problems. However, they will not usually give advice or tell you what to do. The Counsellor might sum up what they understand you have been saying so that they can help you to form a plan of action.

Counselling can take place in a number of ways. These include:

  • Face to face session

  • Group session

  • Phone session

  • Email session

  • Online through live chat services or video conferencing software

You may be offered a single session of Counselling, a short course of sessions over a few weeks or months or a longer course that lasts for several months or years.

It can take a number of sessions before you start to see progress but you should gradually start to feel better with the help and support of your Counsellor.

You can be confident that any of the Bark local Counsellors listed will give you a reliable and efficient service to help you feel better.

You could look for Counsellors that are accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) which means that they have met the PSA’s required professional standards to practise.

Before you choose a Counsellor, you could read testimonials and read details of the issues they can help with on their website.

You could also look at their profile page on Bark and check out reviews from past customers too.

Counselling can help with many issues. These include the following:

  • Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or eating disorders.

  • Physical health conditions such as infertility.

  • Difficult life events such as a bereavement, a relationship breakdown or work-related stress.

  • Dealing with difficult emotions such as low self-esteem or anger.

  • Sexual identity issues.

  • Divorce.

  • Redundancy and work issues.

  • Phobias and fears.

Absolutely! Many Counsellors provide their services remotely via an online video call or the telephone. Not only is it more convenient, but it's also the preferable option for many people who would feel more comfortable holding the session from the comfort of their own home.
