What makes a great website?

Good web design always caters to the needs of the user. Each page of your website needs to have a clear purpose, and to fulfil a specific need for your website users in the most effective way possible. People on the web tend to want information quickly, so it is important to communicate clearly, and make your information easy to read and digest. Some effective tactics to include in your web design include: organising information using headlines and sub headlines, using bullet points instead of long windy sentences, and cutting the waffle.

A well thought out colour palette can go a long way to enhance the user experience. Complementary colours create balance and harmony. Using contrasting colours for the text and background will make reading easier on the eye. Vibrant colours create emotion and should be used sparingly (e.g. for buttons and call to actions). Last but not least, white space/ negative space is very effective at giving your website a modern and uncluttered look.

A picture can speak a thousand words, and choosing the right images for your website can help with brand positioning and connecting with your target audience. If you don’t have high quality professional photos on hand, consider purchasing stock photos to lift the look of your website. Also consider using infographics, videos and graphics as these can be much more effective at communicating than even the most well written piece of text.

Navigation is about how easy it is for people to take action and move around your website. Some tactics for effective navigation include a logical page hierarchy, using bread crumbs, designing clickable buttons, and following the ‘three click rule’ which means users will be able to find the information they are looking for within three clicks.

It is now commonplace to access websites from multiple devices with multiple screen sizes, so it is important to consider if your website is mobile friendly. If your website is not mobile friendly, you can either rebuild it in a responsive layout (this means your website will adjust to different screen widths) or you can build a dedicated mobile site (a separate website optimised specifically for mobile users).

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

Please tell me about your business?

What is the purpose of the website?

Describe the style of the website you want.

Do you have specific company colours that need to be used?

What types of things do you see on other websites that you really like?

Do you have a budget you are trying to meet?

What do you love most about your job?

I love the variety of different website projects. I am learning all the time developing my skills further and I am able to use my skills and knowledge as well as push myself in areas that I am unsure of myself.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I had come out of university studying software development and I was working for an accountant firm as a purchase ledger clerk so I wasn't using any of my skills. I was working there about 6 months and was creating a few websites in my spare time for friends who were staring up their own businesses. I knew I wanted to be a full time web designer and developer but I didn't know how to go about it. I went for a few interviews at software houses but I realised they weren't for me and knew I wanted to start something on my own. I eventually had the guts to leave my job and start promoting my business using various marketing tools. It wasn't until a month after leaving my job I got my first job in. From then on my business grew and grew. I am always learning new skills so I am up to date with the latest technology. That is one of the things I love as technology is always changing so learning these changes and implementing them into my clients website give me great job satisfaction.
