What makes a great website?

The User Experience (UX) is the focus and priority when developing any new website.

- Mobile-First Design (It is extremely likely that the majority of your users will visit via mobile. The site not only needs to be responsive, but priority must be given to mobile users)
- Outstanding Creative / Aesthetics
- Clear Online Value Proposition (OVP) and Unique Selling Point (USP)
- Content - Strong Visuals (Photography/Illustrations) & professional copy with a targeted tone of voice.
- Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) - A/B Multivariate Testing creative and user journeys.
- A strong foundation for SEO (Technical SEO, Page Load Speed Optimisation, Strong Site Architecture, On-Page Optimisation, Historical Redirects & Page Mapping)

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

// Situational Analysis - ALL
- I will ask a variety of questions to understand the nature of your business (I will be able to develop a strong picture through my own research, but insights from owners will always assist) What are the products services that you provide? Who are your main competitors & market leaders? What is your Unique Selling Point? Product/Service Prioritisation? Product/Service Margins etc
- Do you know the profile of your target users?
- Can I have access to existing analytics (Facebook, Google, Webmaster Tools) & existing marketing campaigns (For research and historical insights) ?

// For Web Development:
(i) How closely would you like to be involved in the creative direction of the project?
(ii) Would you like to to provide examples of websites/creative that might provide direction?
(iii) Do you have any domain/hosting requirements? (If they currently exist, please can you provide access?)
(iv) Do you have a sitemap for the project ? (What pages do you require?)
(v) Do you have existing content / visuals that you want to use?
etc

// For SEO / PPC / Display / Social :
(i) Do you have any existing keyword / topic research ?
(ii) What are your goals / objectives?
(iii) What are your budgets?
(iv) Do you have in-house capabilities for content (Video, Photography & copy) ? Do you have resource to support regular output of articles (Blog/News/Press Releases/Industry Insights) - If not, do you have resource/time to support the development of content by providing rough outlines (for industry insight articles / case studies / press releases)?
(v) What platform (if any) is the website developed on?
(vi) Can I have FTP access in order to implement strategy for Technical, Architectural & On-page SEO optimisation? & to develop bespoke landing pages for PPC / Display / Retargeting Campaigns?
(vii) Have there been any historical Google penalties ? (These would have been visible in webmaster tools)
etc

// The above provides a flavour of the types of questions that I will work through with you when starting a new project.

What do you love most about your job?

I love solving problems. I also love using the range of skills that I have developed to support the development of online businesses. No marketing channel can be viewed and developed in isolation without compromising the whole marketing plan. At the heart of any successful marketing campaign is the website, providing the foundation for all marketing activities and playing the most significant role in converting users into customers.

Solving problems across each of the critical touch points within a users journey brings great satisfaction - because it creates happy clients.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Problem solving. I started my own business at University after identifying an opportunity within the insurance sector. For the first 4 years we averaged sales of 10,000+ per year before redirecting focus to new areas within the travel industry.

Throughout this time I have worked at large Marketing Agencies, taking on the occasional temporary contract for large clients - but always maintained a small list of clients on retainer for marketing & web development.

Why should our clients choose you?

I am not arrogant enough to say that anyone "should" choose me - a range of factors will determine if I am/am not the best candidate for any given job. However, I will only develop proposals for businesses if I am very confident that I can add value to that business. Also - unlike many freelancers who may 'dabble' in certain areas - I have a successful track record of working very specialist roles in the specialisms that I offer - within very large organisations.
