‘19 Certificate of Excellence

My belief is that businesses should be using good quality, well planned, authentic photography which actually depicts the people and the business. Too often stock images are used to try and establish an identity or poor quality photos populate a website. My belief is that using images which tell your story, for real, builds a bridge of trust with your clients and customers. I am convinced that not doing this damages your business and ultimately your bottom line. My role is to make you and your business look good and everything I do is centred around that aim. It’s not about me, it’s about you! But just a brief outline... I am a photographer based in Farnham, Surrey with a studio in Frensham. My main area of photography covers pretty much anything you can shoot in the studio and business/corporate work outside of the studio. Business photography is a particular interest so I offer headshots and environmental portraits for use across social media platforms, as well as print media, storyboard photography where I work in conjunction with the business and marketing companies to create an ongoing pictorial narrative of the business activities. The studio is excellent for headshots and portraits for individuals or groups as well as a wide range of product photography from pack shots to promotional images covering anything from medicine bottles to sculptures. We can also set dress the studio. I also shoot model/actor portfolios, events, corporate news, interiors/architectural and lifestyle.

What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?

That the photo conveys a message. There is a saying that beginners think it's about the camera, enthusiasts think it's about the lens and professionals know it's about the light. True. But when it comes to photographing people it's about the character, the expression, the feeling that emanates to the viewer. Everything else can be flawed if that emotion takes hold.

In other photography, business promotional images for example, it is again about the message. The photo must say something. It must convey something to the viewer who is likely a potential client or customer. This comes from content, composition and the right use of the photo at the right time in your marketing or PR.

Photography isn't a 'dark art', but it is about paying attention to people, the surroundings and for commercial photography, the client's communication needs.

Photography in it's own way is as much a language as the spoken and written word.

I use the principle of QCM - Quality, Content, Message.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

Is there a clear understanding of what the photos need to do for your business?
Are we working to create images to fit an already established brand image?
Is there a fixed budget and if so what is it? (sometimes just asking for a quote is the wrong approach)
Is this a one time commission or will you be looking to evolve and develop the photography ongoing?
Do you have really good, real coffee?

What do you love most about your job?

You want to know what I love? It’s seeing someone receive a new headshot and being chuffed! Especially someone who hates being photographed. That’s why I do this, to make people feel good about their photo and by extension give the business a better image with customers.

The same with all the other business photos I produce. It is great to see a client appreciate what their business can look like in photos and how that is seen by their clients and customers.

Why should our clients choose you?

OK, here’s the thing. I’m a commercial photographer which means that most of my work is around three areas: headshots, business narrative and product.

What that means is that I work with companies and individuals to make people, stuff and the business look good. Simple.

If you’re happy with dodgy profile headshot photos and dull or anonymous photos of your business then fair play to you, but I would seriously urge you to stand back and see your brand through a client's eye. But, if you want to start presenting a sparkling look to your staff, yourself, your business, then we should talk. Remember QCM.

I make my headshot photo sessions with you and yours a little event. I don’t turn up, mumble, point, shoot and wander off. I’ll set up a studio and introduce you to my Hair and Make Up Artist to get that extra polished look. Even for the men. A light dusting never hurt anyone!

It’s not like I’m pulling teeth! Just look at what you’re presenting to your customer base, your audience and if it all looks a bit rough and frayed, in need of a makeover, a freshen up, then get me in!

It’s what I do for you!

Stuart Perl, MD AmaWaterways UK
Matthew was recommended to me for producing headshots of our staff, alongside team photos for our marketing use and website publication. Matt was unknown to me but I took the recommendation and booked him for a photoshoot at our new offices. Frankly I couldn’t have been happier!
Matt arrived with a ‘can do’ attitude and an enthusiastic but easy going demeanour that put everyone in a comfort zone for having their photo done. The whole experience was painless and the results superb. Since that first booking Matt has twice returned for new employees, more team/group photos, some character portraits and has delivered every time with a quick turnaround.
I highly recommend Matthew Burch to any organisation that requires professional and excellent standards of corporate photography.

Louise Howland, Marketing Manager at ramsac
We needed new headshots of our leadership team and a whole new set of corporate photos to use in our marketing. Matthew worked with us to meet the brief and everyone has been thrilled with the result. We have had other companies ask us who took our photos so they could work with Matthew as well. Matthew was professional, efficient, friendly and most importantly took great photos. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Matthew in the future.

John Phillipou, CEO of PEAC Finance
We needed some formal corporate photos along with some more relaxed portraits for our staff. Matthew visited our offices, set up a studio in the boardroom and quickly got even our shyest staff members to relax and smile. The results are great and being used throughout the business. I would really recommend Matthew for his professional and at-ease approach.

Rebecca Bromley, Finance at Digital Experts Academy
Having always been ridiculously un-photogenic, ("you look like an alien", "You look too enthusiastic", "relax your face more" and my personal favourite "you look simultaneously happy, surprised and like your about to die") I was pretty apprehensive about having a professional photo taken. BUT, after much persuasion and seeing the photos Matthew had already taken I decided that it was time...
I arrived at the studio and was greeted by Matt and his lovely wife, provided with a delicious coffee and complimented on my choice of outfit (I was told to brush my hair though, which was good advice!).
Matt had already set up the lights and we agreed on a grey background. I'm not sure whether it's part of Matt's process and whether I'm giving away a trick-of-the-trade but Matt had me sit on the stool and told me he'd take a few shots to make sure the lighting was right etc. WELL, it was during these shots, where I felt most relaxed that Matt captured the one above. We went through all of the shots he'd taken and we all agreed that this one was the best at capturing my personality and I left the studio a very happy 'model'!
The absolute bonus was that I didn't have to wait long for my picture to arrive, Matt sent the photo edited into B&W, colour, full picture and optimised for social media that evening and they are now proudly uploaded to anywhere and everywhere that needs a picture.
Thank you so much, Matthew, I am thrilled - as you promised, it was fun, quick, easy and I couldn't be happier with the result.

Guy Pearson, Business Growth Specialist
I was recommended to Matthew Burch for some new headshots and he was quick to respond, full of good ideas and very thorough in his approach. The thing I liked particularly about Matthew is that he spent a long time making sure I got all the varying headshots I need to choose from; there was no "stopwatch" running with Matthew. Very professional, good to work with and would recommend him without hesitation.
