Three months ago, at the age of 69, I was told by my doctor that I had progressed from being pre-diabetic to being diabetic and that I would need daily medication for this condition.
I have never liked doing exercise or going to a gym but I knew drastic changes to my lifestyle were needed if I wanted to halt my decline into diabetes. I had been doing long walks before breakfast for a couple of years since my retirement started, but clearly this was not sufficient.
I knew Mateo was a skilled masseur and fitness trainer, he told me about the Fitness Republik gym, in Streatham, he had opened with a business partner Miranda and he invited me to visit it. I was very impressed by all the exercise machines and that it was not open-plan but a number of interconnecting rooms for different exercises. I started taking a weekly, one hour personal training session with Mateo and it really has changed my life.
Mateo is a great personal trainer, he supported and encouraged me to change my attitude towards exercise and after a couple of months I even started to enjoy the sessions with him. I continued with my daily walks and I did the exercise routines Mateo taught me on my own at home almost every day. I lost around 4 kilograms in weight and last week I had blood tests following which my doctor told me that there was a significant improvement in my haemoglobin A1C test results and that my diabetes was in remission. I feel much fitter, stronger, happier and everyone I meet tells me I am looking younger and heathier. I intend to continue with my new regime and lose even more weight and become even fitter and stronger with Mateo’s help.
I highly recommend personal training sessions with Mateo at the Fitness Republik gym if you need help getting fit, losing weight and beating diabetes.

I cannot recommend Miranda highly enough. After a hard year and battling with body image and self confidence issues, Miranda has been nothing short of amazing.
She is accommodating to all ability levels, shes motivating and supportive. Not only does she help you become physically stronger, she also helps with nutrition and how you view yourself. She has gone above and beyond to ensure that I get the most out of our sessions as possible. I even managed to get my friend along and she has chosen to go ahead with a block of personal training sessions with her too.
I worried that having a trainer would actually make me feel worse about myself and I’d be doing it for all the wrong reasons. Miranda’s made me realise that I’m doing this for me and not to fit into social norms.
I truly believe that Miranda came into my life at the perfect time and for the first time since I can remember, I feel that my body goals are achievable and I’ve started loving myself a bit more since meeting her.

I am having so much fun! Who knew working out could feel like this! Miranda is my 1:1, but we also have a crew. We work out together and although we all have different goals and reasons for being at the gym, Miranda facilities a space in which there is both individuality and teamwork at the same time. We laugh a lot, sometimes we cry (and it feels safe to do that). We even drink coffee and eat cake on occasion too… working with Miranda has made me view my abilities in a completely new light. If you’re looking for PTs that listen to you and care as deeply about your goals as you do and who can challenge you to achieve them (all whilst reminding you that you’re gorgeous just as you are) then I can’t recommend these two enough. What’s the secret to getting the body of your dreams?
Look after your mental health and the body will follow.
Eat nutritious, clean food, drink plenty of water and exercise at least three times/week.
Be in constant movement: take the stairs at work, walk up the escalators when commuting, stand on the tube and train.
If you have a desk bound job, take regular breaks, include some body exercises while the kettle boils, i.e. squats, press ups and lunges.
What do you love most about your job?
We are both a people's person.

What inspired you to start your own business?
I was a successful Retail Manager and I loved my job however I had achieved everything I could in my line of work and there was always something missing.
During lockdown I qualified as a PT with YMCA and that gave me the opportunity to help people in a different way.
At the beginning, it was meant to be just a side job however soon I realized that helping people to get healthier, happier and fitter than ever, gave me the satisfaction I had always craved for.
Seeing my clients changing their lifestyles and hitting their goals, achieving things they never thought they could, gives me enormous happiness and satisfaction.
I also love a good challenge!
Matteo has always worked in the fitness industry and his experience is paramount. We soon realised that we were a great team together and we shared the same views on our approach towards fitness and a person's journey to a healthier lifestyle. We wanted to be different, to distance ourselves from the traditional image of commercial gyms and fitness industry. Our aim is to empower people, to restore the love for exercise, healthy living without having to give up the small pleasures in life.

The first studio, Fitness Republik, opened its doors on 1st of February 2022, at 191 Streatham High Road, SW16 6EG.
We do 121 and 2:1 PT sessions, classes and much more.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
We am very conscious of the fact that through the nature of our job we are at contact with various people, so we are taking regular lateral flow tests.
We also use face masks and make sure that equipment is regularly disinfected.

In addition to the exercise programs tailored to my customers, I can offer nutritional advice to support the lifestyle changes and the new training regime.
Boxing and Boxercise
We also offer 121 boxing sessions and boxercise classes to improve cardio, balance, coordination and more importantly as a form of self defense.
