If your remuneration package were to rise by £5k, and you have 10 years left to retirement, your return on investment is £50k minus the cost of your coaching package. This is a relatively low estimate of the return for many clients. If your raise were higher and/or your time to retirement is longer, the return is even greater. Investing in coaching is investing in yourself (or your executive where the organisation is sponsoring the coaching development) to give you the best opportunities in life and work, to clarify what you really want, identify how you can achieve that, maintain the dedication and focus to keep going and do what it takes to move into your stretch zone and achieve your aspirations. Sometimes the return is financial, particularly where your work impacts on your team’s performance and the organisation’s performance. Sometimes the return can’t be measured monetarily, it is more about getting the most out of life, being happy, fulfilled and content in yourself and your relationships, and enjoying your life and your work. That’s priceless! In a work context, it also has a positive impact on the emotional commitment you put into your work (your engagement at work) and the culture and environment you create around you at work. Studies have shown that engagement and wellbeing at work raises the performance metrics for the organisation (E.g.: reports by Gallup, McKinsey, NEF and academic articles). Other clients of mine have found the return on their investment included greater opportunities for their career or organisation and in life away from work, gaining promotion, being more strategic, being more resilient, being more confident, stepping up to higher leadership level, raising credibility as a director, growing their business, increasing profits, feeling happier and more resolved personally, finding fulfilment, more enjoyment in life, and many more. Potential financial return on investment: For an individual private client. Consider that your coaching programme is often about you becoming more effective, managing the challenges you face, being a better leader, raising your leadership presence and accelerating your career. For some of my clients, the coaching programme is about finding a completely new direction in order to find more fulfilment, happiness and the right work life balance, including very often a more financially rewarding career. Many of my clients gain a promotion or negotiate a salary rise as a result of our work together. If your remuneration package were to rise by £5k, and you have 10 years left to retirement, your return on investment is £50k minus the cost of your coaching package. This is a relatively low estimate of the return for many clients. If your raise were higher and/or your time to retirement is longer, the return is even greater. I would expect you to have more than just one promotion or salary increase over your remaining career, as you benefit from the programme long after we stop working when you continue to implement the strategies you have learnt. For many of my private clients, the more intangible personal gains in terms of improved confidence, happiness, fulfilment, relationships, wellbeing, health, reduced stress and choosing to live the kind of life you really want to have are more important than the financial return on their investment in coaching. It can be useful to consider how much you would normally invest in all your holidays each year and whether the changes you want to achieve through coaching have greater or less meaning, benefit and value for you.
