Describe your creative process.
There are many levels to this, with the first one remembering that the requested artwork is for someone else, not ourselves. That means, acknowledging that we’re here to serve the needs of the client, not our own egos.
After that comes communication, and treating the client like a partner; an equal. We may be well-versed in our craft, but most of the time, they know what they want. They just need some help bringing it into reality.
We also want the client to see what we see during the whole creative process, so we invite them to journey with us (we do this by sending them updates at various stages). That way, they know what they’re getting - if that’s what they want, because we also have those clients that have seen our work or heard about our reputation and so are happy for us to just crack on with it and then show them the finished result.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
For us, the first question is, “So when’s the deadline?” Super important, because if it’s tomorrow or in 48 hours and you’ve agreed to take it on, find out the deadline later and then can’t deliver... well, guess who’s getting the blame.
Outside of that it’s practical stuff like style, preferred medium (materials), size, location (can it be sent or delivered online?), and that other all important question; “So what’s your budget?”
What do you love most about your job?
Ooh! The fact that it doesn’t feel like a job. The freedom... Freedom to create, freedom to express. Yes, there are parameters, yes they can be challenging sometimes, but what we like to say is, “Be like water. Water always finds a way.” So we’re always trying to push ourselves creatively and find new ways of making things happen.
Also, no two projects are the same, so that keeps it fresh and interesting too. Plus, we love what we do, are truly passionate about it, and we get to geek out with our creativity, how cool is that!
What inspired you to start your own business?
Many moons ago when I was at elementary school, our head master gave a presentation in assembly of all these works by the Renaissance artists, the old masters (he had these large prints). I loved drawing at the time but seeing this was another level entirely. I was totally inspired!! After that, I knew I wanted to be an artist. Then, geeking out over Star Wars when that came out meant that I would devour any books, magazines and articles on it, which fuelled my love and deep appreciation of concept art. One of the reasons why whenever I watch a film - no matter the genre - I will always stay ’til the end of the credits. Not just to enjoy the soundtrack or to reflect on the film, but to appreciate all the time, effort and talent behind the scene’s that’s gone into making it.
So, yes, not ever being a ‘9-5er’ meant that I was always destined to walk a different path.
Why should our clients choose you?
Good question. Well, on the one hand, they know what they’re getting, and on the other hand, they don’t know what they’re getting. Yes, bit of a ‘Schrödinger's cat’ one there, so allow me to elaborate.
They know what they’re getting: By looking at our body of previous work, our track record and our current or recent projects, they will see that they’re in safe hands and that we’re more than capable of delivering on their request.
They don’t know what they’re getting: We treat each project as if it’s our first (with a fresh outlook and enthusiasm), and each client as if they’re our best. That keeps us wanting to do more, aim higher and give our absolute best to each project. This allows us to create artwork and designs that’s more than what the client expected. Is in that sense, they don’t know what they’re getting until they see the final piece of work.
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
Yes, in terms of doing a digital design or even say, a portrait, the idea, concept or image can be sent to us digitally. From there, we can work on it, communicating with the client via phone (WhatsApp), e-mail, and Zoom during the whole process, until after delivery. The files (if digital) can be sent to the client via WeTransfer or posted (recorded delivery) if a hard copy (drawing or painting).
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
Much of our work is remote anyway, so the main change has been to have phone/Zoom meetings.
