Architectural Services

The key advice I was given before embarking on a large build and refurbishment project was to choose and Architect on recommendation of a trusted source AND get lots of quotes/options………. .

James and SA came through Bark and was the first person I met!!

Many other options considered, recommendations acknowledged and 6 months later, we have decided to go with SA! James’ practical, upfront, clear, honest and process driven approach to our consultations is why I have decided to use them.

For me I value more than anything someone who will take time to practically think of the challenges the project may rise, rather than looking for either cheapest option or most artistic creativity.

I think with James and SA I have found someone who addresses my key value driver, whilst also having a great looking portfolio of stylish projects.

I have to acknowledge that the proof will come with a successful project! So watch this space, but so far I couldn’t be happier with the way SA have approached the process.

Excellent and professional. Solam really helped us open our eyes to the potential our property had. She listened carefully to how we used our space and came up with solutions to make our house a home that suited us.

We are currently at Phase 2 and the whole team at SA Architectural Services have been wonderful. They are punctual, attentive, professional and we believe they have the knowledge to get our build in motion. Right from the outset the order of steps were clearly itemised including expected timeframes and all costs. We have in particular found Chris Nichols to be a true asset to our project, he is easy to understand and was able to make sense of our ideas providing knowledgeable suggestions to help us achieve a design that really suited us. They are always quick to respond to any emails from us and keep the project moving. We would highly recommend them to anyone thinking of starting a building project.

Q&As

If it is robustly built from bricks and blocks that's a great start, although timber framed structures can sometimes be converted too! Integral garages in modern properties are usually very straightforward and cost effective to convert.

You need to add insulation, electrics and heating pipework, or sometimes an electric heater can be used if it's too difficult to get pipework to it. There will need to be work to the garage floor, and possibly some additional doors and windows in the structure. The shell can then be plastered and decorated as normal. One thing to be aware of is that garages sometimes lack a foundation across the front where the door is, this quite often needs to be put in so the garage front can be blocked up to take a door or window.

The loft would need to be at least 2.35m tall in the centre under the ridge, preferably much higher. Generally speaking the loft would be relatively free of structure. Modern nail plated trusses are generally difficult to modify but it can be done. It would need to be a large enough space to make the conversion worthwhile! Be aware that the area where the staircase is will mean that floor area is lost where the stair comes through the floor. It is almost certain that the floor of your attic will need to be strengthened.

The loft would be assessed for suitability, and drawings and supporting calculations made to ensure the build is undertaken properly and efficiently. if applicable planning permission should be gained, but building regulations always applies. Generally the process of undertaking a loft conversion is to erect scaffold, and make a hole in the roof (through an eventual window aperture) to undertake the work. A small hole will need to be made in the ceiling for measuring the staircase, but generally most of the work in the loft can be done before the breakthrough to the lower floor for the staircase, and any services such as drainage or water supplies. Loft conversions are a little tricky to get right, typically the stairs will have to come up into the loft under the ridge, or sometimes a dormer window can be built to take the staircase. In any event the location of the staircase from the floor below needs to be carefully considered so you don't lose too much space downstairs.

The business was founded in 2012 by my wife Solam and I at home. Now we have grown to a team of 7. We have a design office in very accessible Brundall, Norfolk just off the main A47 Trunk road.

We carry professional indemnity insurance that covers our clients in the unlikely event of any mishap with the design. We are highly qualified, and are therefore bound by the code of conduct of the various chartered bodies that we belong to. The customer can have absolute confidence that any work produced will be of high quality.

I love meeting people and getting to know them. Once we know how and if we can help, I personally handle the initial stages of the project to ensure that your needs and options for the design are fully understood. Solam Sizer, my wife who has a degree in Architecture then takes over with outstanding concept design solutions that have allowed our business to win several major design awards.

We thought we could do better than our existing employers, and, although we both had good offers to continue our employed careers, we identified that there was an opportunity for us to make a difference to our clients experience of the design and construction process.

We go further than most others to understand the needs and priorities of our client. We combine this with our skill and passion to make every project we handle the best it can be. We get to know you, and understand what you want making creative suggestions where appropriate. This allows us to streamline the design process, whilst of course adding value where we can. We're very friendly and approachable, and care about the customer experience of the whole process. Our clients profit from a high quality light and comfortable living space which suits their lifestyle, and allows their family to flourish and grow in comfort and style.
