Absolute botch job took more money to put it right, don't even bother with them or you'll regret it

Martin Barnes/Low cost lofts/Martin Barnes Joinery: the worst mistake you could potentially make.

Following recommendations we asked Martin to convert a house into 6 bedroom ensuite HMO for us. He said it would take 2 months. After 4.5 month and not being near complete and with the whole house looking like a waste tip (off cuts of building materials, discarded disposable coffee cups , drink cans and food wrappers...stuff everywhere) we were glad to see the back of him.


We provided the shower-room items. He erected stud walls without measuring the items would fit and before installing waste pipes. He was then surprised the shower-room items would not fit. Had to move stud walls and cut up floorboards which could have been easily lifted if the correct order of works had been followed.

Martin's tiling was awful (uneven surface , stupidly small cuts because of lack of planning, Jagged edged tiles, tile grout lines not meeting up in corners, uneven gaps between tiles, no trims around windows). In the end, some tiles started falling of the walls (we have video of how easy they are to get off the wall when we starting ripping out Martin's work) . The shower fittings wobbled and his plumbing leaked and sprayed water everywhere when connected up. This was because Martin had not used the correct insert fittings, except in three joints in one of the shower-rooms!

He used up over a 100 litres of paint without preparing the walls properly. Instead of rubbing down and preparing and filling, Martins method was to paint the walls then fill them, then sand patches then paint them then fill them then sand and paint in repeated cycles. The final effect, as he never got to the end of his cycle in the 4.5 months, is patchy awful looking walls.

Overall if you want a bodge then highly recommended. Also if you need a builder who on the days he is on the job will not turn up until after 9 am and leaves by 2.15 (with coffee and lunch breaks thrown in), spend weeks achieving very little except making excuses and disappearing off the Job for days this is your man.

In the end we are just glad he is gone even though we are now spending thousands fixing the mess he made More...

We asked Low Cost Lofts to complete a 5 flat refurbishment, which he said would take 5 weeks, after week 12 we just wanted him gone, we got to the point where we didnt care what work was outstanding, seeing the back of him was good enough. Absolutely shoddy work and attention to detail. Kitchen tilling is awful, washing machine points not fitted, bodged showers, the list is endless and we still keep finding more. We're just thankful that its not our house, I feel sorry for anyone using Martin Barnes/Low Cost Lofts for work on their own property. Beware and use at your own caution More...
