I first heard about Jim Farey’s drum lesson’s through a mutual friend. He couldn’t have been more complimentary about him. Anyone with young Children understands the anxiety of an adult being in close quarters with their child...so, after a warm welcome, I was relieved to find that he was very hospitable to parents who wanted to stay throughout the lesson. He has a complete, and up to date, DBS check and works within a school. He’s pretty incredible with kids too, in fact he did everything he could to put my son at his ease. Before long they were getting on like best mates. But, this takes nothing from Jim’s teaching ability. The focus of the lesson’s are both practical and theoretical. That being said, all theoretical tuition is put in to practice through the drum kit, in a way that kids will understand. There’s a real encouragement to bring in music that the kids actually enjoy, my son really loves this, as his taste is eclectic to put it mildly. Previously, my eight year old had done some lessons at his school...although this was only limited to a couple of drum pads. He now has the ability to play along with songs using the entire drum kit: kick, snare, hi-hats, all of the toms and cymbals. The amazing thing, is that he’s only a few lessons in. Jim often encourages his students to listen to aspects of music they’d never encountered before, thus giving them a greater understanding of music as a whole. The lessons are easy to find, with parking, and he has two drum kits ready and set up to use in his studio. He gives everyone in the room ear defenders and is sensitive towards the kids hearing. We both really look forward to Monday’s now, as that’s when he has his drum lessons More...

James started learning to drum with Jim when he was 6 years old, he got his passion for drumming from Jim and has not looked back. After having different teachers 7 or 8 years on it’s been great finding Jim again . James’ drumming has progressed massively in the few months that he has been back with Jim, he’s learned new techniques and his passion from drumming has been reignited by Jim’s enthusiasm, his skilled teaching and inspiring support. I have been learning with Jim for 16 months. I have made huge progress in that time in terms of drum knowledge, technique, musical awareness and complexity of what I do. My lessons have been tailored to what I want to achieve and I have enjoyed the experience. Jim is passionate about drumming and music. This comes over in the teaching. Thank you for a great time. My son has just started drum lessons with Jim and is absolutely loving it. He has made a huge amount of progress already that we really couldn't have predicted. Jim has a really positive and nurturing way of teaching that has allowed Leo to feel relaxed and able to apply all that has been taught. I highly recommended Jim to any parent who is thinking about this opportunity for their child. More...

I've always loved music as a hobby, and the drums were something I had wanted to try for a long time. Since I started to learn about 9months ago (very much from scratch! ), I am so grateful to Jim for making it a worthwhile experience. His teaching is really fun and relaxed, but at the same time allowing you to challenge yourself as much as you want to. I have no doubt about his exceptional levels of expertise and experience, and just as important to me, his enthusiasm is really contagious. I find it difficult to fit in lessons around work, and he has been so helpful in arranging later evenings whenever he can. He is an all-round extremely talented and a really nice guy. A pleasure to spend time learning from him - thoroughly recommended and I wouldn't look back for a second. More...

Jim has been teaching my son for a couple of years now. He's a great bloke and Niall absolutely loves it. He has really progressed, getting a distinction in his last exam and is now working toward his next grade. Jim always goes the extra mile and nothing is too much trouble. I would highly recommend him to anyone. More...

my partner gave me two lessons with Jim for a gift a little over a year ago. and I haven't looked back since. I look forward to the lessons every week, Jims approach is extremely casual and very professional and his knowledge and dedication is every thing you could hope for in a tutor. He is very understanding and patient and pushes you along without forcing you keeping you relaxed and comfortable.
for me Jims teaching methods and style are second to non. If anyone is looking to learn the drums then I would highly recommend Jim.

Easy to get along with and a very talented musician, genuinely cares about his students and their progress. Students are actively involved in deciding what the lesson consists of, grades or just jamming along to songs. Just all-round amazing!

I first met Jim around 2007 when, after much badgering, I finally agreed to my son taking drum lessons. He had had lessons previously in both piano and guitar but it was when he picked up the drum sticks Giorgio found himself musically under the direction of Jim. In fact hands would do with any available surface as I’ve noticed with many a drummer and would be drummer!
Jim taught my son for a number of years and I have recommended him to others since. With a solid background in music dating back to his grandfather’s days not only does Jim teach he also gigs which I believe is an important combination. He takes his craft very seriously and is continually developing himself to the benefit of his students.
As a recognised drummer and educator I have no hesitation in recommending Jim Farey to you.
