I recently visited Crowborough Rugby Club and was bowled over by the warm and friendly welcome I received. The Club House facilities are fantastic and everyone is so welcoming. My family and I enjoyed watching the Ist XV play Hove RFC and found the atmosphere fantastic. The drinks are reasonably priced and the food was great, I would recommend the club to family and friends and we will definitely be back soon. More...

I'm not a usual Facebook user, can't remember the last time I actually used it, years ago... so writing and posting this today shows how disgusted I am. .. I visited Crowborough Rugby Club today to watch the match between them and Hove Rugby. As is usual I took my dog with me, as do many people in other clubs around the region. Unknown to me Crowborough have banned dogs on their ground. On entering the club house to purchase a beer I was confronted by a lady who started to apologise that dogs were not welcome and could I take the dog out when a man approached and very aggressively started telling me to remove myself and the dog from the club house, citing some local rules and previous issue with a child in his care being ill apparently due to dog waste. His manner caused my daughter to ask him to calm down along with the originally lady doing likewise. Somewhat bemused at this incredibly aggressive attitude and so called welcome to Crowborough Rugby Club, I told the bloke he was an idiot and turned to leave, which is when, completely unknown to me until by daughter told me, he took a swing to hit me, presumably now on the back of the head, which my daughter managed to get in the way of an in so doing he grabbing hold of her. It apparently took several minutes for him to calm down ... he reminded me of a football hooligan, is this the way rugby fans behave? Not in my 40 years having played or watched rugby have I encountered such behaviour. The lady subsequently came into the car park and apologised and explained the dog policy. It appears this ‘gentleman’ is a coach for the juniors within the club. I subsequently watched the match refusing to spend my money on beer in the club, a pity as I was not driving for once. The game itself was a disgrace. I counted four late tackles, all by Crowborough against Hove, none penalised, and a tackle off the ball resulting in a Hove player being punched in the face causing a split cheek immediately under the eye, stitches required and still not penalised. To say Crowboroughs discipline and rugby sportsmanship was disgusting is an understatement. And if they are being coached from a young age, by the guy I first encountered, that this behaviour is acceptable I really think the club need to look at themselves and how they welcome opposing teams. I’d add that the local supporters were like hooligans themselves cheering and jeering in an aggressive and unfriendly way, it certainly did not make for an enjoyable afternoon. Adding to this, my daughter and her boyfriend told me on the drive home that their second team captain stood on a chair during the man of the match ceremony calling their opponents Ditchling Rugby a bunch of C***s, in front of many women and children. Not a place I will be returning and certainly a place I think should be investigated by the RFU. This is the behaviour of hooligans, I have always believed rugby to be a gentleman's game played and enjoyed with respect and sportsmanship whatever the age, club, city or country. If Crowborough Rugby's behaviour is copied by other Rugby clubs then the game and it's supporters will degenerate into the same standards that football has. I'd ask that the officials at Crowborough Rugby investigate this behaviour in an attempt to clean their act and make the club more welcome to visitors. More...
