Q&As

For both, illustration and animation our process starts with a chat with the client to find out what exactly they are after style wise, length wise etc...

The animation process then usually starts with the script. We use it to produce the storyboards and a few concept designs to settle completely on a style. Once this is approved, we move on to the design stage. Everything appearing on the storyboard, has to be designed and built. After that, we set up the scenes in the relevant software and start animating. We usually work in “passes”. The first pass is quite rough, giving the client the chance to make quite important changes if needed. The second pass is a polishing pass. We’ll add more details to the movements and polish the whole project ready for delivery.

As for illustration, the process depends a lot on what the project is. Usually though, we start off by setting the style with the client by producing examples and tests. Once a style is picked, we move on to produce roughs of the illustration and find a good composition of the scene. After sign off of this stage, we finalise the project by detailing it, adding colour or inking if needed and overall polish.

Before starting a project, we need to have a certain amount of information from our client.

For animation projects, we need to know what style of animation is wanted, and what kind of designs the client has in mind. We also need to know how long the animation will roughly be, whether there will be voice over and music needed, the anticipated platform, ie: web or TV and when the project has to be delivered.

For an illustration project, we need to know what style the client would like, how many illustrations are wanted, whether they’ll be used for digital or print and what kind of deadline is involved.
