Stuart filmed our wedding back in September, he was so discreet catching the whole day that I forgot he was there. He had cameras everywhere to ensure he captured every moment. Everyone knows your day goes so quickly so it’s great to be able to rewatch our special day whenever we want. Our highlight video was the most beautiful snippet of our day, with the full length letting us relive the day. I first met Stuart when I approached him to ask if he could digitise my Dad's Standard and Super 8 films. It was no easy task as there was a huge amount and I didn't think I would ever be able to afford or find anyone to take on this mammoth task. From day one Stuart reassured me it could be done and I would have all those wonderful memories on discs, edited as I chose and with music. What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
Timing! Whether it's the light or the reaction capturing the moment is what it's all about, regardless of whether it's a landscape vista or portrait. Technique and experience are important to help to achieve the perfect result right but in that singular moment a touch of soft focus or slightly off framing can be forgiven.
Regardless of what the internet says the latest kit is not important, but an understanding of the fundamentals of photography is. I know that I can achieve a great shot on 35mm film, a camera phone or a DSLR. I shoot professionally on the latest stills and video camera technologies but the old adage is definitely something I live live by - What's the best camera? The one you have with you!
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
What they want to achieve. At the end of the day budget can be negotiated. I always want to provide the best possible result for a client, so I will work closely to realise the best possible outcome for their vision, whether working in video or photography and working within and overcoming whatever restrictions there may be on a given project.
What do you love most about your job?
Just doing. Some subject matter is naturally sometimes more interesting on a personal level than others but I am happy to be there in the moment and love putting it all together in the edit and watching it come alive.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have been lecturing on a film degree for the last 11 years and although I love working with and guiding my students I have become increasingly aware that I want to be out actually doing more myself, hence Stuart Bailey Media has become a reality and I am really excited about the possibilities for the future moving forward and can't wait to get stuck in to as many varied assignments and meet as many new clients as possible.
