This is a great gym, lots of classes to fit in around work and family life. I am not the fittest or most flexible person, in the past 6 months I have lost 10kg and my general fitness has improved vastly. Martin pitches his classes so that new students get as much out of it as those who have been training years. I was worried in the beginning about being brand new and getting injuried every lesson but I had nothing to worry about, everyone is willing to help others learn and improve. Come along and try it!! Being a parent is tough. At just the point you grow vaguely qualified to make decisions for yourself, you are entrusted with decisions for other people, which you are vastly under qualified to make. I have two daughters and have always struggled to balance the decision making trifecta of what they want to do vs what I want them to do and what they really should do.I felt I was making a selfish decision with the logic of a caveman when I decided to encourage my children to participate in combat sports. I wanted to toughen them up, so that in situations I could not help they would have the skills and the confidence to protect themselves - selfish caveman. While I had minimal interest myself in participating, the opportunity to learn something in parallel to my children was one that I thought would be beneficial to us all.We bounced between leisure centres, and various martial arts clubs until finally settling on Reigate Martial Arts. Since then we have not looked back. Martial arts by definition requires a level of discipline that children respond to in different ways. It also requires trust in the teachers and for potentially monotonous routines to be made fun. As well as a friendly environment where physical activity can be carried out in a non-threatening way.A safe family oriented, friendly and trusting environment where people kick each other in the face is a paradox I thought impossible to find.In reality we have found much more.My wife who I had relocated to reigate, for a job, had never quite settled and was keen to move. My eldest daughter particularly, was shy, sensitive and prone to emotional outbursts - and my circle of friends was limited to work colleagues who sit at desks all day eating pastries. The development of my family, since joining the gym 18 months ago has been profound. My wife and I recently vetoed a fantastic job opportunity I was offered in Singapore. Because we are unwilling to move away from our circle of friends. Mostly from the Gym.My children train four times a week in both kick boxing and brazilian jiujitsu and both recently entered their first competitions in both. Their confidence has grown immensely and they take pride in their achievements and helping their friends to achieve their goals also.Ironically, I started training to share the misery I was inflicting on my children. I think if the gym and social circle were taken away from me, I would be the most devastated. Each of us, including my wife, now train at least four times a week. The mainstay of our social community exists within the gym, our coaches and training partners are also our friends and I feel that we are participant in a hugely positive community. When I joined RMA I thought I was signing up for another gym membership I would waste and probably cancel. My family seem to have found a community of friends and I credit one of the most profound changes to our lives together. What a shock! More...
